OK, so it looks like the problem is on the udev/kernel level if the card insertion is not detected here, unfortunately that's outside my area of expertise :( You might want to check with the users or better the kernel list on how to debug this. Maybe dmesg gives some hints?
Thanks for all your help! Stupid me, yes, it looks like a hardware issue. The front panel USB plugs seem to be broken. Those on the back work.
