[opensuse-wiki] use of localized wikis
Hello, wiki team :-) As you may know, the localized wikis are no more in par with the english wiki. I plan to create new page (or translate some from the en one), and I would like to know what is the prefered syntax. Until now, it was advised to use the very same name from the english wiki and do a redirect to the localized page. For exemple, if a page "install on usb" was on the en wiki, the french wiki held a page "install on usb" that redirects to "installer sur usb". This allowed the interwiki links to work easier. * till the move these links don't work anymore -lack of "old-" in the link. Could somebody correct this or explain how I can do, at least until the localized wiki have done the move; * How can we do similar things now for new pages? http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Wiki is about new in a wiki organization. That articles are growing steadily in number.

This can be used, but it is not requirement. I've seen interwiki links that are written in a language used on target of such links, and they work fine. The only benefit is that there will be no problems with language related bugs in MediaWiki software, but as Wikipedia has a lot of translations I suspect that they have no many bugs left in the version 1.15.1, which is the one that we use.

I would leave this part to somebody else to explain, but my opinion is that you should create new links that point from new wiki article to translation.

Vote for wiki update to state same as en.o.o, but before update is applied don't do anything like translation of wiki portal to French: http://fr.opensuse.org/Portal:Wiki Any page that is created now with syntax that mimic namespace will disappear when namespace Portal: is created in fr wiki. Now it will be considered as article in the Main namespace with title "Portal:Wiki". When Portal namespace is created MediaWiki will look for article with title "Wiki" in namespace Portal and as there is none, so you will see empty page. We got that with HCL namespace, and cure was to use direct access to database to move articles. We don't want to ask wiki admin to do that more often then necessary.

The problem is the same as for the English wiki. There are tons of links everywhere pointing to pages in the wiki, but which have been renamed, and thus are broken. Even searches in google sometimes point to pages that exist no more. So, in the language wikis there are links to the English wiki, which are broken as well. Repairing all those is daunting. And nobody knows what to do. For example, there is (was): <http://old-en.opensuse.org/Teams> It has a drop-down list at the right top corner, with partial list of languages to which it has been supposedly translated (not all are in the list). The modern equivalent is, I assume <http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Teams>. Some of the links there remain broken (no one has commented on this yet, I have asked several times). The translated one is <http://es.opensuse.org/Portal:Teams>, completely empty, as it is <http://es.opensuse.org/Portal:Equipos>. When we find _VERY_ prominent links we create redirects. Everything else has to fade away or will update itself automatically (search engines).
