[opensuse-wiki] KDE vs GNOME default FAQ

With the announcement of the results, I have seen *countless* comments that go of the form: "Wow, 70% KDE users. Surprising SUSE default to GNOME and are trying to push for that.." "Novell's attempts to make SUSE more focused on GNOME have failed" etc etc In general, there's a very clear ignorance out there on the openSUSE case with the desktop environments, so could someone who has the powah add it to the http://en.opensuse.org/Faq ? At least then there's a nice place to consistently link to. http://en.opensuse.org/FAQ:Desktop would be better with additional benefits that we can include more details than KDE and GNOME relation to openSUSE and everybody can edit it. For instance: What is desktop? What is desktop environment? What kind of desktops SUSE includes? The rest belongs to reorganization of front page content: - FAQ is minimalistic and somewhat obsolete, there is many more to be written on different topics like Hardware Support, Proprietary Hardware Drivers, ATI and nVidia, Wireless, etc, with articles that are devoted to thema. - Communicate should be renamed to "Support Options", which will name it by function it provides and help new users to find help instead to go around looking for forums with SUSE in name. Few links belong to the second level menus. The example of simple wiki page that provides almost all that we need on main openSUSE is http://www.mono-project.com/ . -- Regards, Rajko. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

I'd rather it went on the "openSUSE FAQ" which seems to be that page I linked to, since I think it's a very general openSUSE question and mistake that a lot of people have in mind. Comments from the last few days alone with the results from the survey appear to indicate that. I think it should go here: http://en.opensuse.org/Users_FAQ Which doesn't require special powers. The other FAQ is more project oriented, whereas the latter is distro oriented. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

I very much think the question _is_ project related though; it's the issue of which desktop environment they centralise on, pipe their efforts into, etc. For openSUSE the bar level-weighted. Definitely seems like a general openSUSE question/issue to me, though it really doesn't matter that much I guess. So, how should we phrase the FAQ? Here's one proposal. Q: What is the default desktop of openSUSE - GNOME or KDE? A: openSUSE supports a number of popular desktop environments, including GNOME and KDE. During installation, the user is asked to choose between GNOME and KDE but no default is given. Both desktop environments are mature and feature-rich, which one a user choose is a question of personal taste. What do you think? since nobody objected, I put it onto the FAQ page: http://en.opensuse.org/Faq#What_is_the_default_desktop_of_openSUSE_-_GNOME_o... -- Regards Frank Frank Sundermeyer, Technical Writer, Documentation SUSE Linux Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, D-90409 Nuernberg Tel: +49-911-74053-0, Fax: +49-911-7417755; http://www.opensuse.org/ SUSE Linux Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nuernberg) "Reality is always controlled by the people who are most insane" Dogbert --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

Looks great; thanks Frank, Aj. One thought that just came to me though, why not change the first sentence to say: "openSUSE supports a number of popular desktop environments, including GNOME, KDE, and Xfce." What do you think?
