[opensuse-wiki] Your SEO Aims for Wiki and other documentation.
Regarding the meeting discussion on SEO, which AFAIK was rather unresolved. I use SEO principles every day so have a few thoughts on the matter, but first I want to clarify what the aims and constraints for openSUSE are. I'm not familiar with Wiki software, so my Main question is: With the wiki, is it possible to add meta title, keywords, description to individual pages or are you talking about one wiki-wide set of data? And are there any other serious constraints to optimizing the Wiki? (conventions?) Secondly, what is the AIM of optimizing the Wiki - and other documents (news, blogs). Is it - 1) make it easier for people to find the openSUSE pages they are looking for? (for example, make sure that someone searching for OBS step by step finds the right documentation) or 2) bring more traffic, and generate interest in openSUSE by optimizing for non-SUSE-specific topics? (so that someone searching for 'linux virtual server' finds an openSUSE page) Of course both are possible! I've sent this query to both wiki and marketing lists, as SEO can be considered when writing ANY documentation that will be published. It is not the mysterious black art that expensive webpreneurs would like you to think it is. It is a very simple, clear and easy process. Obviously for best results a bit of time needs to be invested, but even for a quick blog post it's possible to spend a few moments considering the SEO. I'll have some more detail on that soon, but first I'd like to hear what you are hoping to get out of the SEO process, how you see it fitting with our aims. World domination is certainly an option.... cheers Helen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

Well, I am not sure of this as I will have to look into the entire code and I dont have the time to do that

To increase our visibility, For news we intend to add it to various rss forums too

If we want meta tags specific to single pages, we need to install an extension. That's not too hard - but of course it should only be done - if it makes sense SEO-wise and - if there are some people that actually add those tags. Merry Christmas! Christian Boltz --
Adding a self-removing SuSEconfig script calling rpm -e --noscripts would be an ugly but working work-around. [...] Wow. Extremely right, while I have submitted a couple of meta tags for landing pages, I dont know I actually will be able to add meta tags for the whole wiki Also I had rather write and transfer contents rather than manually adding meta tags, since that is more beneficial even from an SEO point of view. Regards Manu
Merry Christmas!

Would - using and describing the the keywords in the article - adding some redirects - adding some more/better categories - write some defining and theme orientated articles on things people would search for like articles on "Email", "Server", "password manager" etc. not work as good as for search engine optimization and for the real users that are using the build in search engine of the wiki and are searching for content? Just some thoughts pistazienfresser -- - openSUSE 11.2 with GNOME 2.28.2 (or KDE 4.3.5) and Kernel Linux 2.6.31.14-0.1-desktop (or ~pae, ~default, Ubuntu 10.4 LTS 'lucid' 2.6.33-24-genetic, MS Win XP) - Samsung X20 Pentium M 740 (1730 MHz) Intel 915GM 1400x1050 - openSUSE profile: https://users.opensuse.org/show/pistazienfresser -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org
Absolutely. Content is the keystone to SEO. Meta data is nice, but it's really an extra. Crosslinks from external sites help too. The other thing is, there's no point in working on SEO for things that are already ranking well. So we'll need to go through and identify the key areas where search engine ranking is lacking (basically brainstorm a list of topics and google them, works for me!) and then tweak existing pages, plus get our bloggers to write and link to those. It's summer holidays + Christmas holidays here right now, but I'll be happy to take a look at this soon, if nobody else is running with it, and if people feel it's worth putting some effort into. I think it would be a reasonable aim to identify a few of our strongest areas, like those you've mentioned, and ensure that people searching generally for those will find an opesuse solution for their needs. cheers Helen

Besides search engine ranking focusing on content would have additional benefit for users and more users means more hands that will contribute. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org
