[opensuse-wiki] RFC:Title capitalization on the openSUSE wiki
We've discussed which style of capitalization should be used on our wiki. Couple of years ago I changed requirement to use Wikipedia style and gave example of "Benefits of Open Office" and "Benefits of open office" as sample where first can't make difference between institution called Open Office and work style that keeps some office open in some way, while Wikipedia style is clear in that proper noun is written capitalized, and all other nouns not. Hi Jean, The "open office" term is in some examples really the OpenOffice.org (those about CamelCase), but in above example it is not. I took the same term in all examples, just to show how important is to have capitalization set right. Book style, where almost all words are capitalized was, and still is, correct for books, but people on the web don't read the same way. They scan menus and lists for keywords, and they better to describe
like openSUSE that should not have the first O capitalized (what is plain ridiculous in many langages)

I'm not in favor of this, nor do I think this is a decision under the Wiki Team. This is more a decision that affects the whole project and should be discussed more broadly. But I'm also not in favor of this because many of us have spent a lot of time educating others about the proper spelling of openSUSE. I wasn't present at the discussions that formulated the rules, but those rules are in place now and I think it's going to be a black eye on us all if we have to re-educate people, including the media, on what is the proper new name change. We're still struggling with people out there calling openSUSE Suse. Others still refer to openSuSE. or SuSE. We've explained it to many people. Now we have to re-educate them again? The rules, as I understand it are: - it is spelled openSUSE (One of the greatest distributions around is openSUSE.) - Except when beginning a sentence, then it is capitalized. (OpenSUSE isn't just one of the greatest distributions, it's the best!) The RFC wasn't about openSUSE name, but about the title capitalization style for articles and article sections that should be used on openSUSE wiki. The Wikipedia has a longer article explaining this, and conclusion is to capitalize only proper nouns and begin of the title. We use both, book and Wikipedia style, and we have to settle on one to provide consistency. I didn't realize that. But still, we cannot have pages starting with a lowercase letter. This will be fixed once we have a newer version of MediaWiki installed and two (or one) extra templates.
Hence if you go for http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Foo with http://en.opensuse.org/fooBAR difference can be easily noticed. ( as already mentioned by Remy above).
