[opensuse-wiki] To Level Categories
The wiki grows and is more and more difficult to browse. I propose we think about new kind of Top level Categories. I dropped some ideas here: http://en.opensuse.org/Top_Level_Categories I think we shoud avoid some kind of basic names (help, documentation, HOWTOs) that are too undefinites for this level These TLC should give access to a tree, with SLC (secondary Level categories). These two kinds (TLC and SLC) should only be visible in category pages themselves (not on ordinary wiki pages) your opinion? jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki-unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki-help@opensuse.org

your opinion? jdd I strongly agree that the categorization of the wiki pages needs work, but we have a few problems. First, I'm not sure why, but I couldn't see any SLC's on your page. What I could see of the TLCs looks very good, although I'm sure there are some things that could be added. Candidates might include installation and user environments. I agree
jdd wrote: that "documentation" does not need to be there, particularly since it is in the left hand column. Second, why do you feel the applications need to be TLCs? This would lead to an ever growing list and would seriously clutter the TLC page. Unless they could be put in a separate column they need to be lowered to SLC status. Third, and most difficult, we do not have much (any?) control over how the TLCs are displayed, unless you propose building (and maintaining) a manual TLC page. In particular, the wiki software insists on listing the TLCs alphabetically, which is most unhelpful. The inclusion of "Category:" on every line seriously clutters things up. It would also be nice to be able to include a sub-heading to clarify the categories. Hmmm, maybe a manual page _would_ work best. If we kept the list fairly stable, and maybe had a way of automatically categorizing all new category pages. of course. Doubly confused. I see no asterisks on the page (except the header) [Running Seamonkey] Or is your TLC list just: By line of business By application Names Experience level By skills This is WAY too short. Still confused. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki-unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki-help@opensuse.org

It is displayed now, at least in Firefox, old Mozilla browser and Konqueror. The point is, now when Jean started this, to think about and see how develop system that will work good with present structure of articles on the wiki. It is really huge task that we should do once and than maintain. I agree about manually maintained index(es). That would be the way around pure alphabetical order that in case of subpages works really bad. All HCL/* are under letter H. Greg you are, as native English speaker, in the best position to propose names for categories. -- Regards, Rajko. TLC must be very short. this is the reason of SLC. of course the list I give is only a starter, but the TLC number should not be more than ten. The choice between them should be obvious for the user. jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki-unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki-help@opensuse.org

OK, I think I'm starting to get what you are proposing. I finally found the asterisks when I opened the page for editing. :-) I think you have convinced me that fewer than 10 TLCs is a good goal. I will give the idea more thought, and dig out my thesaurus. I would like to have the Top Level titles be grammatically consistent. One issue is still unclear though. How are you suggesting we handle applications, and how are they different from "lines of business" such as graphics? Could you give some examples? --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki-unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki-help@opensuse.org
