[opensuse-wiki] Sorting out wiki: Portal pages
I added Documetation page to the Portal. As Josh mentioned it looks like documentation portal, so why to reinvent wheel. It would be probably good to use Portal: as prefix for any page that is meant as Portal. One day if needed it can be moved to separate name space. I was thinking of purpose of portal pages. What would be difference between normal index like http://en.opensuse.org/HOWTOs and some new Portal:HOWTOs. Former should point to the index of all articles in that category, but have more content, like fields: 1- new added articles to the list 2- editor pick for article of the month with comment 3- the top list of the most visited articles last week, month, year - (any other ideas) The 3rd is relative easy to script. Retrieve popular pages, grep file for names in the list, sort and publish result. -- Regards, Rajko. That sounds interesting. It would be good to have dynamic content like that on portal pages. Maybe we could also have a section for "Most Wanted Articles", so that others can see what articles could be written to enhance that category. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Looking for last minute shopping deals? The dynamic will be as much hands can type in the begin, but yes that would make difference to never changing index page. Even the index can be enhanced with some sort of new articles. The layout and browsing like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal to resolve muliple articles with same keyword than http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Contents which in our version can be openSUSE:Wiki_Navigation as introduction to concept and than http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:List_of_portals but with http://en.opensuse.org/Help:Structural_Page_Elements to get look and feel like the rest of the page. I guess that I have to find and list the rest of links. http://en.opensuse.org/Help:Content_Elements http://en.opensuse.org/Help:Tag_Formatting I can't find color pallete except this one: http://en.opensuse.org/Artwork:Guidelines and I know that there was another with colors used for different opensuse.org sites. In the category hierarchy we have been saving categories named documentation for articles actually *about* documentation. Shouldn't we do the same within the portal? Maybe the recently added Documentation page should be renamed to Help? Also, I'm thinking is that each portal page can have a main index page related to it which would be linked to at the top of the portal page. In this case, we would have a Help Portal (Portal:Help) and we would have that Documentation article (renamed to Help maybe). The Documentation article would have the dynamic content such as recently added, most wanted, etc and the nice layout with sections. The portal page would be just as they are now, a list of the articles in that category. Finally, in the documentation page, we have the configuration and HOWTOs sections. It seems not many people can tell the difference as the two categories contain the same articles in many cases. Many of which are written in a HOWTO style. Maybe we should drop that configuration section and just leave HOWTOs. This would prevent user confusion when they are looking for help on how to do things. Configuration pages are telling you *how to* configure something so it does fall in that category. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Looking for last minute shopping deals? I would leave it as is. See explanation below.

You have http://en.opensuse.org/Portal_New . That page is scratchpad, remove present and create some layout of your idea. Text only, or with images as placeholders, or completely as image of layout, whatever is easier for you. Make something that is visible.
Finally, in the documentation page, we have the configuration and HOWTOs sections. It seems not many people can tell the difference as the two categories contain the same articles in many cases. Agree. I tried to explain myself difference, and all I can see that articles in Configuration are subset of HOWTOs. Now some old stuff that I have forgotten about, but it explains main problem when wiki user is looking for help. First attempt is to browse or use search. Frank mentioned not so good search function and it seems that satisfaction with search was never high. I just stumbled over one old article http://en.opensuse.org/Help It was created in June 2006, when I was trying to cover single word search terms like help, mirrors, factory, hardware, kernel, boot, image, graphic, etc, by creating article that will offer available articles with that search term which should be lesser confusing than Search results. I didn't went far as that was way too much work for one man, but this is how categories, portal pages, indexes should be organized. First simple word, than subsections with articles. That way many articles will appear in few places, but they will be always found. That method corelates well with your idea of tag categories combined with subcategories. I'll try to create real model with few words (Tags) besides Help page. If it looks right than we can go and continue work. I'll use Popular pages and grep lines with few words like 'help' and see what will come out. Above means that we need sorted categories as base (template) for all other pages. So discussion and work continues. -- Regards, Rajko. Another portal page we should probably add is "Browse by Category." This would incorporate our idea for tags. It would allow for viewing all articles on a certain topic like KDE, GNOME, 10.3, etc. Each of the topics could have a section or subpage within the portal page. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Looking for last minute shopping deals? Good idea to put "Browse by Category" in Portal main page. I was looking how to determine current popularity of articles. Numbers on popular pages are sometimes misleading as some articles that today are irrelevant like SUPER have historic large numbers that keeps them high ranked. You can see preliminary and some comments on: http://en.opensuse.org/User:Rajko_m/Tests Procedure is now manual copy from wiki, to OpenOffice Calc, where is table cleaned up, difference calculated, sorted by current popularity, and then exported as PDF that is good source to get table almost ready for wiki, ie. needs minimal format adjustment. I didn't found the way to copy Calc table direct in text format. It works fine with HTML, but than manual sorting in groups is no more simple. This procedure can be applied to any size and popular 500 will be ready in a day or two. While all of popular pages have to wait at least a week from today to get some numbers. The automatization of process is another story. -- Regards, Rajko.
