[opensuse-wiki] Adding a HOWTOS link to the main site
Hello, I was just about to write a How-To when I discovered something pretty weird: on top of the main site, en.opensuse.org (and it probably applies to all other languages as well) there is no link to the How-TOs ( http://en.opensuse.org/Howtos ) The box "Discover It" contains only a link to the SDB. But, especially new users, what do you think they are they looking for... HOW TO do something... and there is no link to the How-TOs... So my proposal is to add a link pointing to http://en.opensuse.org/Howtos to the left box named "Discover It". Of course, the same could be done with all [LANG].opensuse.org sites. It's a good idea. It is already liked off of Documentation, which is linked from Discover It. It shouldn't be on the "openSUSE" box (which is the box that is across all openSUSE websites) though ;-) Have a great day. -- Kevin "Yo" Dupuy | Public Mail <kevin.dupuy@opensuse.org> | Yo.media: 225-590-5961 Swift Change for a Green Future: Kat Swift for President www.VoteSwift.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

It shouldn't be on the "openSUSE" box (which is > the box that is across all openSUSE websites) though ;-) The point is that we shouldn't do to many things in the "Discover it" box. But currently I see 3 topics which are related to Howtos: - Documentation - Support - Support Database Maybe the right approach would be having 1 topic (Help, Howto, Support or similar) below Discover it and from there the 4 different lacations linked off. I think this sounds reasonable. How would it be done technically, some kind of JavaScript menu that expands? It would be fine if we would have Help or Support on main page and then on second page all that can be included in that topic. If we would have second page that means much more space for explanation what visitor can expect to find in each item, add http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Browse page, HOWTOs and much more. Java is fine, but it makes maintenance more complicated (or maybe not). -- Regards, Rajko http://en.opensuse.org/Portal needs helpful hands. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

Generally: I like the I idea of a link to http://en.opensuse.org/ Howtos in the "Discover it" box. Specially 'cause I think that good HowTos make everyones live easier ;-) Specially for newbies! About the three list-items: - Support should be renamed to Communicate (my AI, will be done :) - Support Database ... IMO we could list it under "Documentation" So, I suggest the following new items&order: - HowTos - Documentation - Communicate What do you think?

I think a link to our HowTo-Page is just a shortcut. And isn't "Documentation" a collection of all Help-sources we have? (serious question, I have no clue). How ever, I agree: we should have one Overview-Help-Page.
Java is fine, but it makes maintenance more complicated (or maybe not).
Java or JavaScript? I'm fine with JavaScript, we already use it. I'm also fine with the usage of Prototype, because it's already in use at software.o.o and build.o.o. I wold not like an additional JavaScript Lib like jQuery ... one lib is enough for one page; no question of favor :-) In future we will have to use some kind JavaScript Magic (e.g. toggable manus) to improve the usability of the page and handle the content. This is specially a Wiki topic. Example: http://www.apple.com/downloads/ Good night!
