A site map would be real nice, but unless it could be generated automagically, it would take way too much time to keep up with changes. My guess is we need to work with the category structure. In particular, we need to make it hierarchical. Keep the number of top categories below 20. That would make finding things a lot easier. In addition, it would be nice if descriptions could be placed on the 'special' pages, including 'categories'. --- L Greg Lisle

true. categories are very powerfull thing, must be better documented (on our wiki, for our users). I made this: http://fr.opensuse.org/Liste_des_catégories to display categories with they page content, but it needs to be done by hand. learning the category/sub category is good, browsing the pages to make then into categories also. I noticed on wikipedia that I couldn't create a new page without it being open to add category nearly on the fly (as fast as I even lost some edit text :-) of course this mean special categorizer are working :-) really I think that when the french wiki will be up to date enough I will spend most of my time on this, but for now there are more urgent works :-) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos

Looking at your list, and a list I have been messing with, I propose the following top Categories with some subs. One of the beautiful characteristics of hypertext is that we don't have to decide which category a page goes into. Applications What's available (equivalents) Web apps Office apps Games Graphics GUIs Community OpenSUSE Teams Users Meetings News Promotion Development Algorithms Protocols Drivers Usability Projects Virtualization Documentation Documentation Standards Wiki Graphics for Docs Hardware Compatibility Howtos Release Information (Implementations?) Support Data Base Wishlists and maybe Translations --- L Greg Lisle

I have a lot of work to do before the french wiki is up to date, this i why I make most of my experiments there. You must be aware of the way category/sub categories works. http://fr.opensuse.org/Les_catégories_principales The top categories in this respect are only the ones that have no category themselves http://en.opensuse.org/Special:Uncategorizedcategories compare it with fr one... http://fr.opensuse.org/Special:Uncategorizedcategories the mai interest is that any category can go in several top categories, so multiple ways can bring to the same result. You can have any top category you thing usable (as long as the name is unique and the list is short) as can I do. and this is a build in feature, no need to go manually. you can do the same with articles, but this is not automatic. However it's very easy to find the root page from any subpage (sub pages have the link to the father pages) http://fr.opensuse.org/Les_pages_principales example of sub page http://fr.opensuse.org/Formation_d'administrateur_Baby/Installation_de_base/B03-Cours_et_TP/3 jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos

A couple of concerns: First, I suspect it will be easier to maintain consistency between language sites if at least the top categories are parallel. Second, I can see no way to modify the current category list. I can't see a way to remove unused categories, or combine redundant ones. --- LGLisle

I don't think the localized wikis are to be sync with english one. In fact they are more complementary than identical (apart the most important pages)

a subcategory is only a category with one or several [[Category:something]] in it. normaly unused categories don't show in the category lists. To combine display the redundant category, go to any page and replace the link but it's better to have two categories on the same page, may be one is better for you and an other for other people jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos

Thanks for the clarification on the relationship between the localized wikis. My second point was in response to the request on Wiki Team page to do "something" about the Unused categories. The duplication (some of which is on the unused list) I am referring to is things like: wishlist and wishlists user tip and user tips developer and development network and networking I'm less sure about: cryptographic software and cryptographic hash functions virtualization and virtualization software I am sure that we need to get such things as all the sbd categories and the wiki house keeping buried. When a visitor can't find what they are looking for, or ever if it exists, they get turned off. ---- LGLisle

it's only my own opinion :-), based on the fact we never achieve a complete translation and most of our readers read also english.

I think this mean use them :-) and categorise the uncategorized pages :-)
The duplication (some of which is on the unused list) I am referring to is things like: wishlist and wishlists
here I beg the plural is wrong. display the wishlists category, and fix the link (that is remove the 's') in these pages, then remove any [[:category:wishlists]] occurence... in case of doubt, add. That is add [[Category:Wishlist]] and don't delete the 's' version. in case somebody likes it much or search for 'wishlists' (and so on)
I am sure that we need to get such things as all the sbd categories and the wiki house keeping buried. When a visitor can't find what they are looking for, or ever if it exists, they get turned off. ack
:-) and don't feel lazzy, all this is only my own advice and it's no better than your :-) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos
