[opensuse-wiki] What will happen to Wiki after June 1st. ?
First of all, I'd like to thank everyone who engage in and work hard on the transition of Wiki. I'm sorry if I missed important announcements and discussions on this list, but some things are still not quite clear to me. 1. After June 1st., when DNS entry for en.o.o will be switched, how can we reach the contents that are on the old instance (current en.o.o) and {aren't,won't be} transfered to the new instance? <Off Topic> BTW, is it really 'DNS entry switch'? 'nslookup' tells me that IP address of both wiki.o.o and en.o.o are same - 130.57.4.24 - ATM, and when I tried to open http://130.57.4.24/Main_Page , Firefox shows me the message '300 Multiple Choices - Your request could not be processed for this multi-homed web site because no host header was present that identifies which host to access'. So, it might be an Apache configuration issue. ;-) </Off Topic> 2. What will be needed for $LANG.o.o as soon as possible after June 1st.? Is there any list, on which we can see which pages are expected to be updated on each $LANG.o.o promptly after the transition of en.o.o? Pages which are listed in 'Mandatory pages' on 'Help:Translation' are just enough? http://wiki.opensuse.org/Help:Translation#Mandatory_pages I think many problems will be expected to occur after the transition. For example, since names of many pages on en.o.o will be moved to new names in accordance with the new concepts, many Interwiki links (at least, link to English page) in existing pages on $LANG.o.o will no longer work, and, since the version of MediaWiki and many templates are updated for en.o.o, when we create a new translation page on $LANG.o.o by copying the wiki source from the original page on en.o.o and pasting it to $LANG.o.o, the layout might be broken. 3. Any deadlines or milestones for transition of $LANG.o.o are assumed? I read the thread 'German Wiki & Multi-Language Concept' on the archive of this list http://lists.opensuse.org/archive/opensuse-wiki/2010-04/msg00002.html and noticed that 'creating a new languages-server languages.opensuse.org serving as a temporary instance for initial translation efforts' is proposed. Will it be realized and translators will be able to use those temporary instances for their transition? If not, when will all the $LANG.o.o be switched to new instance (I mean, when the version of MediaWiki for $LANG.o.o will be updated), or, will they remain as they are now? There may be many other things we have to think of for transition of $LANG.o.o, but I don't think they are clear to translators ATM. Isn't it about time we start to think of what are necessary after June 1st.? There is only one IP address for www.opensuse.org and the entire wiki farm. We are using Named Virtual Hosts to determine which site is served. Specifically, we are using VirtualHost Alias to serve the wiki farm. None of the sites have the 'name' of the IP Address, which is why you get the error when trying to use it. For more information, you can reference the following: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/core.html#namevirtualhost http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/mod_vhost_alias.html Since there is only one DNS entry for everything, that leaves us a lot of flexibility in how we handle the old English wiki. We can decommission it completely, move it to another name, or simply remove the VirtualHost entry, but leave the content 'just in case'. Thanks for the clarification, Matthew.

That's because I asked the question: How can we reach the contents which only exist in the old instance but are not transfered to the new instance after June 1st.? I don't think the transition will be 100% completed until end of May and maybe we need to transfer additional contents from the old wiki to the new wiki after June 1st., or at least we need to refer to old contents occasionally. When names are switched old wiki will be available for some time, so that people can pull content that they want to save. How long it will be online was not discussed, and Henne may give us some idea. -- Regards Rajko, -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

We need to setup a subdomain for this, maybe enlegacy.o.o or sth. like that.

I am not sure if the wiki codebase is updated for all language wikis when we update en.o.o or just for that instance. But many interwiki links will be broken, true.

I would not bet that we meet the deadline of June 1st., as the quality and the amount of content has not yet reached an acceptable state for the switch. I think after the migration of en.o.o the language wikis can also start to use the new structure and rules (see http://wiki.opensuse.org/Portal:Wiki) and be upgraded to the new codebase. The german wiki community already started working on that for the de.o.o version.
