First, I suspect it will be easier to maintain consistency between language sites if at least the top categories are parallel.
I don't think the localized wikis are to be sync with english one. In fact they are more complementary than identical (apart the most important pages)
Second, I can see no way to modify the current category list. I can't see a way to remove unused categories, or combine redundant ones.
a subcategory is only a category with one or several [[Category:something]] in it.
normaly unused categories don't show in the category lists. To combine display the redundant category, go to any page and replace the link
but it's better to have two categories on the same page, may be one is better for you and an other for other people

Thanks for the clarification on the relationship between the localized wikis. My second point was in response to the request on Wiki Team page to do "something" about the Unused categories. The duplication (some of which is on the unused list) I am referring to is things like: wishlist and wishlists user tip and user tips developer and development network and networking I'm less sure about: cryptographic software and cryptographic hash functions virtualization and virtualization software I am sure that we need to get such things as all the sbd categories and the wiki house keeping buried. When a visitor can't find what they are looking for, or ever if it exists, they get turned off. ---- LGLisle
