Jon, actually I cannot find a reference to "rm -rf *" neither in the first nor in the second thread you listed below. Thus I assume that it has been removed in the meantime. That said, I second what you said about the need to come to a single mind here. My opinion in that regard is the following: If the context is a BIG FAT warning NOT to do "rm -rf *" from within the / directory (who would be that crazy anyway), I feel it appropriate. In any other case (unclear context, kidding and stuff) I'd vote for a removal on first notice by wiki/forum moderators without any further team discussion needed. I mean this is really dangerous for the unexperienced end-user. Opinions? Thanks for bringing this to public attention, R 2010/2/17 Jon Rocker <linux.learner@gmail.com>:
A user by the name of dvhenry recently discovered what happens when you run rm -rf *.

Another user, fiertel91 also discovered what happens when you run that command.

In the first case, the code was removed, in the second case, the code was allowed to stay. I understand the New user safety. http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Wiki_Style_Guidelines#New_user_safety
In the second case, I discussed it with Frank and henne on IRC and we decided that removal of the code did not make sense since the article is about what not to do as root. But in the first case, I can't make out the purpose of that article. It's short, but the grammar is bad. The title says its about how that root can run certain programs, yet it used to reference rm -rf *.
At any rate, I feel we need to come to a single mind, a commonality about what is acceptable, regarding scenarios like this. It doesn't make much sense to allow it in one article and not in another. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org
