Whose idea was it to require captcha input in order to search for existing solutions? That kind of nonsense, coupled with https-only Bugzilla access for all purposes, and mousetype CSS text forum page styling (very very rude - see http://www.useit.com/alertbox/designmistakes.html ), is almost enough to cause a switch to *buntu. :-(
It was my idea. It's standard practice to require captcha for searchers that have not logged in. This keeps the search engine running optimally for real users instead of letting it get bogged down by bots. It's a very simple process to bypass the captcha: Login before you do a search. If the system recognizes you as a logged in user, it will no longer requre captcha.
I do login, but Novell websites needlessly expire logins prior to browser close, which like the captchas, and coupled with rude CSS[1], is HIGHLY annoying, and reason to avoid them except as last resort, and means harvesting information only, never contributions. [1] rude: e.g. on http://forums.opensuse.org/clientscript/vbulletin_css/style-19409e5f-00033.c... is the following: body {...font: 10pt... Setting size to 10pt totally disregards (ignores) user preferences, taking into account none of user's: visual acuity DPI accuracy display size seating distance and angle display brightness & contrast ambient lighting other factors affecting suitability of specified size, all of which are presumably taken into account by the user in setting his browser's preference size(s), and respected by CSS that does not change the size on body and containers of primary content/paragraph text from 100% of the browser defaults.
