I like the idea, except the "wordpress" part ;-) Wordpress has a, well, interesting[tm] security history and it seems they need to get fixes out faster than they can be deployed on the openSUSE servers ;-) (see https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=670349) My proposal is to use Serendipity ("S9Y", http://www.s9y.org/). It provides features similar to wordpress and has a much better security history (only one or two security issues per year, and most of them were caused by "foreign" code like the WYSIWYG editor library). S9Y also has the advantage of using smarty templates. Compared to the PHP/HTML mix used by wordpress (AFAIK), already this is a big win - not only regarding security. S9Y also can import data from wordpress etc., so it would even be possible to migrate news.o.o and lizards.o.o to S9Y. Oh, and the S9Y developers are usually very responsive - just in case we need them ;-) Regards, Christian Boltz -- Ich sollte mal bei den Popcornherstellern meine Provision einfordern. We would have to redo everything we did for wordpress over again and would have to throw away years of experience with the most popular CMS on this planet. For what? I strongly object to this. Henne, I understand your point, and I'm also not a big fan of changing everything for little reason. That method would have saved openSUSE lots of trouble in the past (ZENworks anyone? ;-) - but OTOH we wouldn't have the wonderful libzypp based package management we have today. Sometimes there are good reasons for a change, sometimes there aren't. Seriously: Can you give a short summary about what is "special" in the openSUSE wordpress installations (news.o.o etc.) compared to a vanilla wordpress? I'll then try to give a rough estimate how much time a migration would take. I know the migration to S9Y would cause some work (template, [your_list_here]), OTOH there is a big security win and Matthew would save lots of time when it comes to installing security updates ;-) (and more important: the risk of getting news.o.o hacked/defaced etc. would be much lower) Regards, Christian Boltz -- Unix: Alles ist ein File, und was kein File ist, hat sich gefaelligst als ein solches zu tarnen. I never talked about Macs... *SCNR*
We don't have a problem with wordpress. If we would have I would be the first one to try to change it.
Well, IIRC there was a hacked blog some time ago - not on *.o.o, but on *.novell.com (and IIRC this indirectly affected some *.o.o blog also). I know it was a one-time event, and hope it won't happen again. Still I would call it a "problem" ;-) I prefer to use software that is known to be secure (or at least much more secure - I know nobody/nothing is perfect) instead of hoping not to be the victim of the next wordpress exploit ;-)

I'm sorry but you need to be willing to drive this including all the development and teaching. I get that you think wordpress isn't any good and that S9Y is better but either _you_ do something about it and do the migration or not. A good idea isn't automatically viable. Hi Christian Let us have a look at the number of wordpress sites they are larger and so the possibility to hack into it is also larger. I have no problems working on whatsover the platform be but why leave wordpress at the first place, that is my only question surely accidents do happen.. even the gnu server was compromised, fedora was also a while back but that happens. If you can tell us concretely why wordpress is a failure, such as they do not have XYXZ security issue which serendipity then it should be better. We are choosing wordpress because 1. It is secure (even if it is not as serendipity.. I am not sure about that) 2. Updates are easy.. these days wordpress admin panel provide their own update 3. Lots of know it already 4. Saves time Regards Manu On Fri, Mar 4, 2011 at 3:49 PM, Henne Vogelsang <hvogel@opensuse.org> wrote:
