[opensuse-virtual] installing 12.1 as a xen guest - lots of BIOS EDD facility v0.16 2004-Jun-25, 0 devices found, EDD information not available.
(newbie alert) I'm trying to install 12.1 as a xen guest, which appears to start well, but then ends in a hang after several messages: [ 5.343822] BIOS EDD facility v0.16 2004-Jun-25, 0 devices found [ 5.343846] EDD information not available. [ 5.528399] BIOS EDD facility v0.16 2004-Jun-25, 0 devices found [ 5.528424] EDD information not available. [ 5.724198] BIOS EDD facility v0.16 2004-Jun-25, 0 devices found [ 5.724223] EDD information not available. [ 6.105002] BIOS EDD facility v0.16 2004-Jun-25, 0 devices found [ 6.105026] EDD information not available. [ 6.288697] BIOS EDD facility v0.16 2004-Jun-25, 0 devices found [ 6.288721] EDD information not available. I'm using vmlinuz and initrd from http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/12.1/repo/oss/boot/i386/ I've tried adding "edd=off", but with zero effect. Any hints or pointers, please? I've also tried just booting a guest from the NET iso, but that seems to hang at 'xl create'. No doubt a config issue. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (3.1°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-virtual+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-virtual+owner@opensuse.org

I doubt these messages are related to the hang, but just in case they are - you'd want to blacklist edd.ko (or eliminate whatever leads to it getting loaded; this happening multiple times makes me uncertain where to point you, normally I would have told you to edit INITRD_MODULES in /etc/sysconfig/kernel and re-create the initrd). Hi Jan I used brokenmodules=edd, which gave an interesting result - on the console, I see one instance of: [ 1.382786] BIOS EDD facility v0.16 2004-Jun-25, 0 devices found [ 1.382815] EDD information not available. but the system still ends up hanging. Without blacklisting 'edd', I get 20-30 repeats of the above, but I agree, it's not likely to be causing the hangup. Ah well, I'll keep looking. thanks Per -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-virtual+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-virtual+owner@opensuse.org

Okay, I'm making a little progress - I added "xencons=tty" to the command line, and the guest now continues wtih dhcp. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (3.4°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-virtual+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-virtual+owner@opensuse.org

Okay, I'm making a little progress - I added "xencons=tty" to the command line, and the guest now continues wtih dhcp.
Which means the system didn't really hang, you just didn't see it make progress anymore. Jan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-virtual+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-virtual+owner@opensuse.org

Duh! Of course, thanks for explaining it. If anyone is wondering, I've also got the network bridge working now, and I am just about to start yast. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (4.2°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-virtual+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-virtual+owner@opensuse.org
