[opensuse-virtual] Still open bugs in Opensuse Virtual. How to help in testing?
Hello List! I am reading here http://en.opensuse.org/Welcome_to_openSUSE.org that there are "5 days to go" to Version 11 relase. Two bugs are now only concerning me Bug 394575 - cannot install XEN guest - network issue https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=394575 Bug 398932 - "trap divide error" appears when launching the Virtual Machine Manager https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=398932 In his earlier comment, Jason at Novell said On Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 9:30 AM, Jason Douglas <jdouglas@novell.com> wrote:
Even though the fix has been submitted, it might take a while for a new kernel to show up in factory. Hopefully it will be there very soon, as many people are anxious to get the fix, and we would like to do some additional testing on the official build.
It has been some time now since I am able to do work with Factory because of these bugs. And nothing is there in the repositories to help to test. Is there another way or place that we can help testing? I dont believe that a desision exists to make the new release with the bugs in it? -- Thank you! I wish there were really 5 days left. We have been locked down on the development side of things for about a week now, and they are taking no more changes. Bug #394575 should be fixed in the final release. I don't know why factory hasn't been updated with a newer kernel since May 31. Bug 398932 did not get fixed yet, but hopefully a fix can be released in the update channel. The biggest concern for me is Bug 397097 - installing 11.0 RC1 x86 under x86_64 fails .... https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=397097 We have a fix for that, but it did not make it into the final build. The concern I have is that the updated kernel needs to be present at install time, so anyone who want to install a 32-bit paravirtualized openSUSE 11.0 guest on a 64-bit hypervisor, is going to have to do some work to patch their install source with an updated kernel. I suppose that's doable, but not very convenient. Sorry I can't give any better news. Jason

It seems it is a strange policy to Release such major things without a user testing stage. For example another Release Candidete. Many users will be hopeful I think that it will work in the Release! If not if will be very difficult to isntall in any case.
Bug 398932 did not get fixed yet, but hopefully a fix can be released in the update channel.
It did work in a earlier beta release, but then was broken. It too makes it impossible to use the Virtual Machine gui. Do you think that it will be more or less soon in the Update channel after the Release?

That does'nt sound like a good User solution for an important function. It sounds more like a "Release for the sake of release" which our managers here fight strongly against on our products. Maybe do you think that the priorities of Virtual Xen in the Opensuse Release are not so high? I am not always very clear on what is a "Critical" or "Show Stopper" bug or who decides the choice of which bug is which.
Sorry I can't give any better news.
Thanjk you again for your clear answers. Good luck in the next days! -- Thank you!
