[opensuse-virtual] 11.3 on Xen 3.1 (oS 10.3)
Hi, I just tried to install openSUSE 11.3 as guest on a 10.3 (aka Xen 3.1) host but booting the kernel failed immediately. I haven't found useful logfiles but the vm disappears basically immediately again. Should it be possible to run/install 11.3 on Xen 3.1? Thanks, Wolfgang -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-virtual+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-virtual+help@opensuse.org

No, the 11.3 xen kernel only has compatibility back to Xen 3.3. Regards, Jim -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-virtual+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-virtual+help@opensuse.org

Thanks. That's bad news though. Even more I fear the answer to my next question then: Would 10.3 guests run on 11.3? Upgrading the Dom0 will be a lot of pain but having to upgrade that and some of the guests at the same time will be almost impossible. 1. Try to run in 11.3 guests in HVM mode (as opposed to PV mode) as a quick solution 2. For the long term, consider an upgrade to a different hypervisor, such as VirtualBox -- -Alexey Eromenko "Technologov" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-virtual+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-virtual+help@opensuse.org

Not sure if I can do 1. in my setup. 2. is something I need to think about. VirtualBox sounds like the wrong choice to me though. I'm running virtual servers on that host and Xen sounds much more natural to use as VirtualBox (which looks quite desktopish to me. I'm using it at home to run Windows or Factory.) KVM might be the way to go then? Anyway that's not my current issue. I need to do a plan to do remote-only upgrades to Dom0 and a set of DomUs with the shortest downtime possible. (And no, that is not commercial but there are around 100 users affected). Are there any KVM features not in VirtualBox ? VirtualBox is universal. At first it was developed as a desktop virtualizer, but as of v3.2 it has gained plenty of server features. Live migration, Memory page sharing, VDE network, VNC server, GuestExecute, VirtIO network, FlexiNetwork, SMP, CPU-hotplug, ... -- -Alexey Eromenko "Technologov" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-virtual+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-virtual+help@opensuse.org

Yes, older guests on new host should work. That's a common use case. Folks want support for their new hardware (upgrade host platform), but stability for their certified workloads (same guest platform).
Upgrading the Dom0 will be a lot of pain but having to upgrade that and some of the guests at the same time will be almost impossible.
IIRC, the support docs for SLE recommend upgrading the host before upgrading any SLE guests. Regards, Jim -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-virtual+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-virtual+help@opensuse.org
