[opensuse-virtual] Xen 3.2 and 3.1 host crash when installing Windows 2000 SP4 ?
Hi All, Just did a fresh SLES 10 SP2 install and added Xen 3.2 (with Novell update repository in place).. so this should be fresh and with newest versions. When I try to install a Windows 2000 server the guest setup starts normally right up to the point where the drivers have been loaded and the setup states ' starting windows setup... ' , at this point the Xen host blanks and reboots! I get the guest crashing , but having the host doing a spontaneous reboot does not seem very good. I also had this issue on SLES 10 SP1 and was hoping Xen 3.2 would fix this. The server in question had an AMD X2 processor, but I've also had this on an Intel based Dell Poweredge 1950. Is this a known issue? and any known solutions? One important addition to this setup: The host is running 64bit SLES 10 sp2 and the guest install is 32bit Windows 2000 server. From previous attemps with SLES 10 sp1 I remember the lockup did not occur when running the 32bit SLES version. On Thu, 2008-05-29 at 19:59 +0200, Willem Meens wrote:

Try reducing the total memory assigned to the Dom0 to about 1GB. xm mem-set Domain0 1024 is the command from memory. I've seen similar problems on much older builds of Xen in SUSE/SLES. I've got an Intel system running 64 bit openSUSE 11 beta 3 and running Windows under Xen with none of these issues. Strange. When the whole system does reboot, can you restart the Windows installation? Do other Windows operating systems install? Hi Jonathan, Thanks for your reply. Starting Xen 3.1 it's said the mem setting is not problematic anymore, but it did give it a go to see if it would help... :) No luck though. I've now done two things that seem to have fixed the issue: 1) Latest BIOS update from dell (my test system at home is a Dell Optiplex 740) - there where no specific issues mentioned in the bios version release notes, but who knows... 2) In the BIOS I've changed some settings; - disabled no execute protection (TPM or something it is called) - floppy device was set to usb, i have no floppy on the machine so i've set it to off. - video memory was set to 16MB, i've set this to auto and as extra also forced video card choice to ' onboard' instead of auto. Currently I'm having 2 windows installs run (1 windows 2000 server and 1 2003 server ) along with a SLES 10 paravirtual install, it now all runs smoothly - no hiccup no host reboot! Pause/Resume and starting another vm all goes as it should. This is how Xen is meant to be!! :)~ My gut feeling says the no execute protection was probably the one giving me the issue or maybe the BIOS update did help... I'll revert and give that setting a test when my setups have finished running. Curious to see if there is a similar setting on the Dell PowerEdge server I mentioned that also has the windows 2000 setup issue.. but won't be going there soon (not in the next three weeks anyway). Again, thanks for you suggestion and help! Cheers, Wj On Fri, 2008-05-30 at 10:27 +0800, Jonathan Ervine wrote:
