Installing opensuse on two partitions
Hello everybody! I have read the archives regarding the re-design of the partitioner during installation and after. I could not yet find a post that tells whether there was a decision on providing a live CD that allows the user to install opensuse or not. Anyway, it will not happen for 10.3 as it seems so here is my little ux-bug that I think could still be fixed for 10.3. I filed a bug that it is not possible to install opensuse on two different partitions that reside on two different harddisks. The answer from the dev was that he does not see any need for a change since this can easily be archived via the expert mode. The latter statement proves my point. A non-expert operation should not require expert tools. Hence there is a usability bug. I made some suggestion in the bug report on how to solve this issue. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=299612 I'll add some points to the live cd section of the ux wiki since I think this is one of the major decisions to be taken for the next opensuse release after 10.3. If there is a move to a live cd IMO it does not make that much sense to put a lot of effort into the installation process as it works now, including the issue mentioned above. There is already a live-installer, I believe will be available for 10.3, It obviously has not been as fully tested as the normal installation mode that we've been using for years though.

To accomplish this you do not actually have to use the expert mode, you click on the proposal to change it, select custom, then are presented with a list of hard disks, and can select either "Use entire disk" or select the partition(s) to use. YaST will then create a partition proposal for you. You do not need to use the complex custom partitioner. The changes that can be made at this stage in the 10.3 release cycle are minimal, as we are well past the string freeze for translators. _ Benjamin Weber -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-ux+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-ux+help@opensuse.org

How can one test it? I did not find any download for 10.3 beta 1, just the KDE/Gnome CD/DVD.

You can only install on two partitions that are situated on the _same_ harddisk. I was talking about two partitions on two separate disks. Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-ux+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-ux+help@opensuse.org

There are livecds here http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.3-Beta1/iso/cd/ I am not 100% certain these contain the live installer, try it and see.

I see, that could be made easier, though I doubt it is a particularly common use case. _ Benjamin Weber -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-ux+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-ux+help@opensuse.org

They do contain it but not in a prominent place.
