The script I attached works. I use it weekly. To find out what you can rsync:
rsync mirror.ac.uk:: failed to connect to mirror.ac.uk - Connection refused
Seems like that mirror you trying to use doesn't allow you to use rsync in the fashion I use it.
rsync ftp1.sourceforge.net::

Hmmm. That doesn't work for me. Neither with ftp1.sourceforge.net nor with ftp.mirror.ac.uk. The "::" is only for rsync machines it says in the man-page. Without it I get a bit further:
I try:
rsync -nav --progress --password-file=pdfwdfile --stats anonymous@mirror.ac.uk:/sites/ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/7.1/a1/ tmp/
I get the following output:
rsync -nav --progress --password-file=pdfwdfile --stats anonymous@mirror.ac.uk:/sites/ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/7.1/a1/ tmp/ connect to address 148.88.2.11: Connection refused Trying 212.219.56.131... connect to address 212.219.56.131: Connection refused Trying 148.88.2.15... connect to address 148.88.2.15: Connection refused Trying 148.88.2.3... connect to address 148.88.2.3: Connection refused Trying 212.219.56.152...
I suppose, I am redirected to different mirror servers, but none accept me. If I log onto mirror.ac.uk via ftp, then it is no problem (i.e. it is unlikely there are no ports free).
How can I debug, what rsync is doing?
Regards,
Hans

I can't find a man page for rsync. What is it and why is it useful? Paul
