All, I am having a problem with my backgrounds in KDE 1.0b4. I am not able to get them to display. The last significant change I made was setting my mouse to an intellimouse. This did not cause a problem immediately. The problem came on suddenly, and without anything significant immediately preceding it. I have uninstalled then reinstalled the KDE and all the X stuff. I reinstalled all the qt stuff that I could find. If I look in the .xsession-errors I see: Warning: Could not attach SHM. QPixmap::convertFromImage: Cannot convert a null image KBackground::KBackground KScreenSaver::KScreenSaver KGeneral::KGeneral KFM seems to be crashed !!!!!!! Running new KFM !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well I fixed it. I downloaded qt 1.33, and installed it. I'm not sure what was there before. As soon as I did that and restarted KDM all was cool. Steven T. Hatton wrote:

Well, it's back. Has anybody else had a problem with their backgrounds in the KDE? The really strange thing is that the backgrounds work for the login screens. This is a very strange thing indeed. Steve Steven T. Hatton wrote:

Kde gfx are linked against older versions of libjpeg and libgif. ldconfig -v > list, vi list, and you'll see that kde has it's own objects in /opt/kde/lib for jpeg and gif. I wish they wouldn't do that, it's bad bad bad. If you have gif and jpeg installed someplace else, like /usr/X11R6/lib or /usr/lib, it can break applications that depend on them. Gnome gave me hell for awhile, and it was all due to the libjpeg.so in /opt/kde/lib. Unfortunately, I think the fix is to install kde from source so that kde gets linked against the proper libs. If kde still creates it's own objects for jpeg and gif, I would try moving them and ldconfig, then see if kde links against the correct libs. I don't think SuSE comes with giflib, I keep a copy on a zip cartridge. You can find it on sunsite in case you don't have libgif.so.3 in any of your lib dirs. Just for giggles, try "xv -root -max -quit filename.jpg" from an xterm and see if that displays the proper background image. Steven T. Hatton wrote:

Michael, Thanks for the reply. I learned something new about libraries from this. One day I need to sit down and actually learn the theory behind all this stuff. I didn't mess with the library files other than to look at them though. The problem seems to be related to XF86 and the intellimouse. I found that running XF86Setup and changing the color depth fixed the problem temporarily. It would then come back after a while. The intellimouse has always been a little flaky. I am now back to a standard M$ mouse. I will give this a try for a while. It will probably be the solution. I'm not sure why, but this wheeled mouse just doesn't work with XF86. It causes some of the strangest problems. Steve Michael Lankton wrote:

I use a Logitech Mouseman+. It has a wheel like the intellimouse. If I choose the mouseman+ driver in xfsetup it breaks my mouse completely. I use the std ps/2 driver and it works perfect as a 3 button mouse. I hope the next xfree supports the wheel, cause I've gotten really fond of it from using it in win95. I tried following the instructions as seen on slashdot about getting the wheel to function in x, but as soon as I changed mouse drivers it broke my mouse. Oh well, soon all mice will have the wheel, so support can't be too far off... For those of you snickering about my love of the little wheel, you'll see why I like it so much after you use one for a few days. They rock. Steven T. Hatton wrote:
