I had the same problem. I have an S3 Virge card, which Sax in 6.4 autodetected, and in any case I seem to remember, was also on the list of cards you could choose from. I first tried it with an Olivetti monitor, but like you, got the lines problem, and failing to find any driver info for that monitor, chucked and got an old compaq one, and the problem sorted itself.
