I never turned on the firewall or messed with the /etc/allow,deny, never had to. What is the firewall daemon?
iptables and netfilter are the linux firewall user space and kernel module respectively. If they aren't enabled then it's not an issue in your case. If netfilter is running then you need to check your rules to be sure it's not blocking the ports you need. Take a look in /var/log/messages after a failed mount attempt to see if there are any useful messages there.
