After my daughter's PC developed problems, I decided to install Linux and crossover office and in the process discovered it was a bad DIMM. Now I have Linux as /dev/hda1 and Windows as /dev/hdc1. When I boot in grub and select Windows, it comes back to the menu and boots only Linux. I wonder if my suspicion that Windows (98SE) needs to be on /dev/hda1 is correct, grub is set correctly to boot Windows from (hd1,0). Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Win 98 does indeed need to be on the 1st partition on the 1st drive. Jim

Thanks, also in another post, it's mentioned that in YaST you can do a virtual swap of HD's. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer Linux Only Shop.

This is what I have always understood UNTIL Johann suggested several weeks back having Windows on the 2nd drive. This would normally boot from GRUB on the first drive, but you could take out the first drive and have it boot natively. I have not tried this myself yet, but I am looking for an opportunity. I cannot see Johann's scheme would work if there were a Windows type partition which is recognised as C: before the intended Windows boot partition. I would rephrase Jim's comment as: "Windows needs to be on the partition which is recognised as C:" Which leads to this question for Sid: "Do any Windows type partitions appear on /dev/hdb [or /dev/hda] which are recognisable as C: before /dev/hdc1?" There is only one partition with Windows /dev/hdc1, so I shall try the map command in grub to do a virtual swap and see how that goes, "info grub" says it's the way to get it working. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer Linux Only Shop.

grub> map (hd0) (hd1) grub> map (hd1) (hd0) grub> quit /boot/grub/device.map shows they are swapped, when I try to boot Windows, it throws me to the grub prompt. Perhaps I need to alter menu.lst which shows them as originally set, linux as (hd0,0) and windows as (hd1,0). I didn't have a rescue disk with me, so I left it for another time. What about "grub-install /dev/hdc", do I need that also? Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer Linux Only Shop.

It needs only to be a sole active primary on what it thinks is the 1st disk. Most of mine are actually on /dev/hda3. I generally have more important things to put on hda1 & hda2. -- "Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others..." 1 Peter 4:10 NIV Team OS/2 ** Reg. Actually with the right bootloader and MBR it need not even be active, but there must be no more than one "active" primary per disk or it will not play nice. :-) -- "Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others..." 1 Peter 4:10 NIV Team OS/2 ** Reg. All is well. dos/windoz needs to be on the first hard drive, but you can fool it with grub. info grub -> booting -> general boot methods -> chain loading -> dos/windows bottom of 2nd paragraph explains using 'map' to do a virtual swap of the hard drives. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711
