Mozilla general mailing list spammed to death?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Has anyone else noticed that Mozilla's general user mailing list seems to have been killed by spam recently? See the horror at: http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=mozilla-general&r=1&w=2 I don't understand why this was allowed to happen. It looks like someone upset with the list started subscribing the list to lots of other lists. But, if mozilla were set up to only allow subscribers to send to the list, then the bitter individual would have to subscribe the other list addresses to mozilla-general, but then the other lists should have to reply to confirm their wish to subscribe to mozilla-general. This could be the break-down in the process, as the lists may auto-reply and then that would be good enough for the mozilla list to accept the subscription. It seems the list-manager could just require that new subscribers type in some unique code that an auto-response wouldn't be able to generate. Regardless of the list-admin skills necessary to prevent this I have two questions in light of it: 1) Is suse-linux-e safe from a similar attack? I'd hate to see this resource destroyed by one disgruntled individual. 2a) Now where do I go if I have a general Mozilla user question? 2b) In particular, has anyone gotten Yahoo! chat to work with Mozilla 1.0rc1 under SuSE 8.0? I have the Java(TM) Plug-in 1.3.1_02-b02 installed but Yahoo chat comes up in a tiny little unusable box. The auto-response user "support" from Yahoo! was laughably unhelpful. - -- Brian Key fingerprint = AEAC 149C 913C 59DF 6E29 ~ 91FC 0134 1268 021C 5B0B -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQE84HnXATQSaAIcWwsRAtadAJ4mYlkhcOMuV8t/hGi2xiAY9esGhwCfXZLo LYwhMrIfUldjaefdMU04c18= =Cz24 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

This list was one of the bigger in the world when the Mozilla project was still very wet behind the ears. And some factors prevent us from similar things happening here: o We have one of most competent admins who really knows what he's doing (10+ years experience), and really take care of handling this list. Of course some people whine that he's too tough sometimes, but he's the major reason. o We're only open to subscribers. o We're not setting the Reply-To to suse-linux-e@suse.com We've seen attacks to the list earlier, though, but the list is very alive and kicking. -- Mads Martin Jørgensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort?" -- A.
