I would dislike for others to be censored based on any particular persons or group of persons standards of decorum. Personal attacks I can see being disallowed. But: * Ppersonal attacks do not require profanity. * Profanity is not used solely for personal attacks. * While there may be a few things that almost everyone will agree to cnsider profanity, there are other things that some people consider profane and others would consider the censoring of it profane. So, I would say it's no ones business to even try to govern something as subjective as profanity. Let the social interactions shake themselves out naturally. If someone is distasteful, let everyone else simply find them distasteful. The penalty for that will happen all by itself. Perhaps they find no satisfaction here and go away. Perhaps they recover from their bad day/week/month and are no longer distasteful. Perhaps gradually they learn how and why to even bother to get along with others. Perhaps others do not find every little expletive distasteful in the first place because life is better with a little spice and heat and humor. Perhaps they stay distasteful and stay around but perhaps that doesn't prevent them from being _right_ and/or having valuable insight into technical matters. Perhaps they are both distasteful and technically valueless and even that is useful as a negative example to refer to once in a while. Perhaps it's better to have a little profanity than to allow the nanny logic any validity because that way leads eventually to things like web forum software that break technical data, ie rewriting a cd/dvd drive manufacturer/model string from "MATSHITA UJ892AS" into "MAT[* profanity *]A UJ892AS I would rather deal with a correct asshole than a polite dipshit ANY AND EVERY DAY. There are limits to that. For instance such language in court will get you fined very quickly. And where is the border between profanity and harassment?

No, it's again a question of abiding to the rules of the medium you've chosen to use! It's your choice to not follow them but then you have to accept that others will kick you out. Well, not quite so. There was a case recently, but I cannot recall now if it was in Britain or America, where the judge made a ruling that using the f-word at a policeman was acceptable because it is now a commonly used words - used frequently in American Hollywood films in fact.

Not so, not so at all. My wife belonged to a couple of forums where her posts were disallowed - without any explanation, and one couldn't discuss why they were disallowed. However, one gathered, from how some other posts were written, that the words for she was temporarily "banned" were: "Shitake mushrooms", "skyscraper", "cocktail", and "cackatiel" which we owned. So she ended up writing "Shitake mushrooms" as "S*h*i*t*ake mushrooms" and everything was OK; and so were the other words once she "adjusted" the letters.

Correct. Earlier this year there was one person who insisted that he had the right of Freedom of Speech as per the American Constitution's Bill of Rights and refused to alter his signature which was absolute bigotry against one particular, world-wide, religion. He wouldn't accept, even though requested to do so, that the American Bill of Rights just simply did not apply to this list - nor did it even apply in some cases brought before the USA courts. He got kicked out from all openSUSE lists for this. Prior to him, there was a foul-mouthed individual who was banned from these lists but kept coming back under different aliases until, finally, the "system" caught up with his tricks. I am now wondering if this person has now returned under the guise of "JB" and "John" ("John" is "JB" in disguise if you look at the message headers) and whose language and attitude is almost word for word like that of that banned person serving in US defence forces (last known destination: being re-assigned back to the middle-East). Oh, the brave and intelligent lad was good enough to provide a photograph of himself, saluting the camera in white gloves and marine uniform with snow as the background - I have a copy of that photo. Which is why I am wondering why this "John" is allowed to keep posting.
For now roughly 20 years I'm using email and am yet again astonished how the indirect way of communication makes people use wordings and behaviour that most wouldn't dare in direct personal communication ...
Not only that but being given the ability to hide behind aliases and mail addresses/mail systems provided by ISPs is what makes it very bad. I know I don't need to concern myself with off-topic issues, because this thread is already in another dimension. But I must correct a detail in your otherwise illuminating message, namely that shitakis come only dried. Even now, while I write, there is a basket of fresh (i.e. never dried) shitakis in my refrigerator. There is a wide variety of nifty mushrooms available in the supermarket here, which is little short of miraculous, remembering that when I came here in 1965, one could find even champignons only imported in cans, and celery and peaches didn't exist at all. -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Full disclosure.... I lived in Japan for 6 years and my wife is Chinese. Shiitake is the Japanese name for this particular mushroom. 椎茸. In Chinese it is 香菇 and means "fragrant mushrooms" The first character 香, is the same as the first character in Hong Kong (香港) and as we all know the literal translation of that is "fragrant harbor". -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
