X, Savage driver from sources - will it work?
Hi, I have s3 ProSavage graphics card. It is embedded in the motherboard (laptop) so I cannot upgrade. I use my laptop to watch videos, and the video driver is the bottleneck. MPlayer people (great software, those using xine should give it a try) suggest using a recent version from the maintainer: http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html Now X drivers are supposed to be distribution-independent, but SuSE must have good reasons to keep its own modification. Therefore, simply overwriting the existing binary does not work. Is there a way to make X server ignore module mismach? If not, and I have to build from sources, I gather it is a big project. Could I possibly accomplish it without knowledge of C? Any advice would be appreciated. Regards, Serguei PS To add to a list of complaints about the distro: LDAP v3 server can be installed, as well as GUI clients. Clients do not seem to fully work (read only). After a lot of googleing, I've found that clients are compiled without v3 support. No info in /usr/shared/doc/packages/... whatsoever. As they say, go figure.
