Hi all
I've got my Zip 100 external working. It works great with blank diskettes. BUT when I try to mount the zip tools disk I get this error:
Mount: /dev/sda4 is not a valid block device.
I tried to mount it as both a vfat and msdos. Either worked, any ideas?
The Zip Tools is an unusual beast - it has both FAT and MAC partitions on it, so I wouldn't be surprised if the FAT was something other than partition 4. I never figured out why they made partition 4 the standard for pre-formatted ZIPs...
This was the problem! I changed it from sda4 to sda1 and it worked. Thanks! -- Jim Hatridge Proud Linux User #88484 Owner -- beowulf-newbie list I didn't vote for his daddy either! Hi I'm glad that Jim is now able to use his Zip... However, my problem with the USB Zip remains; I have partitioned and created ext2 partitions on discs using my server (EIDE Zip drive), but there is no way that I am able to mount anything using the USB Zip drive. I can't even persuade fdisk to talk to it - I just get unable to open /dev/sda. Anybody got any ideas? Do I need to upgrade my 7.0 to 7.1 to get the new kernel? Matthew, /dev/sda would equal SCSI disk A...Your talking about a USB device. I would get 7.1 and I would also get the most current stable kernel. I would also check out and see if they have improved USB removable media..which use to suck, but I think it works fine on zips..it's CDR's that have the real issues. I would also check out sdb.suse.com to see if there are any new articles about this issue. Hi Ben Yes, it does look like SCSI , but it's not - the USB storage module uses some form of SCSI emulation... Will try to get 7.1 as soon as it's available in this part of Australia - downloads via my ISP are *toooo* slow for words. Thanks for your help. M Ben Rosenberg wrote:

Anyone using Xfree 4 with an Nvidia Geforce DDR card? My card specificly is a Winfast 256 DDR Using SuSE 7.1 When I first tried to install linux the installation failed after the first restart. This is the point where X is setup. My monitor went black and then it went to sleep. I changed to an older ATI 3d expression card which allowed me to complete the install. I later installed the Winfast (GeForce) card and installed X using Sax2 and later using Sax1 Xfree 3 seems to work fine, although it is noticeably slower than 4. Version 4 will not display fonts correctly in Star Office and printing is dis-proportionate. Also DPMS does not seem to function. Is this an Xfree issue or just my particular video card. I have an ATI 4 meg all in wonder card I could use, but have not tried it...the GeForce is obviously the superior card. Oh, I also installed the RPM's from Nvidia's web site. Perhaps this is the problem? Thanks -Pete
Hi Pete, I'm running this machine with a geforce 256 DDR card. Running XFree 4.0.3 + SuSE 7.1 + KDE2.1.+nvidia latest 0.9-769 drivers. I had the same problem during install with x-setup. A black screen first but I did ctrl-alt-F7 and the x-setup screen came up. Didn't check the glx box option. This will then give you the nv driver and you can run sax2 for fine tuning. You have then different options : install the nvidia drivers, run sax2 -f etc.. or upgrade to XFree 4.0.3 and install the latest nvidia drivers etc..; Don't forget to read the Readme file first. Hope this helps, Filip. Le Dimanche 25 Mars 2001 05:44, vous a vez écrit :

Yup, thanks for the tips. I never thought to try ctrl-alt-F7 doh.... Do your fonts display properly and does DPMS work? Thanks again -Pete

Hi Rick Yes, I missed that to start with, but what I am trying to do now is just to run fdisk on the disk so that I can get rid of the 'orrible sda4 M$-DOS partition and create my own sda1, which I can then give a "sensible" file system ;-) It all works fine on my other machine, which is running the EIDE version of the Zip drive; it's just the USB version that won't play with me. I'm going to follow Ben Rosenberg's suggestion of getting onto 7.1 with latest version of kernel, tools and everything. Hopefully this may cure the problem... Thanks for your advice. And a little tip to all out there on USB and SCANNERS - don't buy a Canon USB scanner if you want to use it with Linux - not supported by Sane. Cheers Matthew Smith Rick Green wrote:
