pppd not setuid root
While it is possible to get Modem to dial-up & connect to Internet, as Root, I cannot understand how to connect as 'User' PPPD dies, with this output :- ....................... --> Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately. --> Starting pppd at Fri Dec 26 14:36:08 2003 --> pid of pppd: 2314 --> Disconnecting at Fri Dec 26 14:36:09 2003 --> The PPP daemon has died: No root priv error (exit code = 3) --> man pppd explains pppd error codes in more detail. --> I guess that's it for now, exiting --> The PPP daemon has died. (exit code = 3) .................... As User, I have joined Groups : uucp, dialout, modem How can I setUID for User & how to fix this, please ? Thanks ____________ sent on Linux ____________

It's been awhile since I had to do this but i remember having to setuid as root for /usr/sbin/pppd. run (as root) # chmod +s /usr/sbin/pppd Every time SuSEconfig is run it'll take off the suid bit. There's a way to keep it like this but I can't remember it. Check the archives, I'd start around the end of september. HTH -- E.F.Maurer Using SuSE 9.0 Pro

'su' to become root and issue: chmod +s /usr/sbin/pppd To keep SuSEconfig from resetting this every time, add this in /etc/permissions.local: /usr/sbin/pppd root.dialout 6755 SH
