Just got a phillips webcam and I wondered if anybody else had one and was using it under SuSE 8.2. According to 'make menuconfig' the driver is available as a [m] module, except I do not know the name of it. Nothing under pwc* seems to appear in /etc/modules.conf ...is there anywhere else I should be looking? thanks George -- George Reynolds Livejournal: http://linux-geek.livejournal.com AOL: please ask SuSE Linux 8.2/2.4.20 user -----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK----- Version: 3.1 GCS/O d++@>-- s: a-- C++@>++++$ UC++++(++++)>$ P+ L+++ E W++@ N+ o K- w--- O+ M V- PS PE Y PGP+ t+ 5 X+ R tv++ b++ DI+++ D++ G e+++ h- r y?* ------END GEEK CODE BLOCK------

The module is called pwc, and there's an optional, binary only, pwcx-i386 which provides support for the full frame compression stuff. I can't remember if the binary only extention is on the disks or if I downloaded it. Do a 'modprobe pwc' and see what happens. --

Any idea how to get the pwcx module working? Do you have to re-compile? I have: Aug 25 12:58:12 linux kernel: pwc Philips PCA645/646 + PCVC675/680/690 + PCVC730/740/750 webcam module version 8.10 loaded. Aug 25 12:58:12 linux kernel: pwc Also supports the Askey VC010, various Logitech Quickcams, Samsung MPC-C10 and MPC-C30, Aug 25 12:58:12 linux kernel: pwc the Creative WebCam 5, SOTEC Afina Eye and Visionite VCS-UC300 and VCS-UM100. Aug 25 12:58:12 linux kernel: usb.c: registered new driver Philips webcam Aug 25 12:58:12 linux kernel: pwc Philips PCVC675K (Vesta) USB webcam detected. Aug 25 12:58:12 linux kernel: pwc Registered as /dev/video1. But then: Aug 25 12:59:37 linux kernel: pwc Dumping frame 6. Aug 25 12:59:37 linux kernel: pwc Dumping frame 7. Aug 25 12:59:37 linux kernel: pwc Dumping frame 8. Aug 25 12:59:37 linux kernel: pwc Dumping frame 9. Aug 25 12:59:37 linux kernel: pwc Dumping frame 10. Aug 25 12:59:37 linux kernel: pwc Video mode VGA@10 fps is only supported with the decompressor module (pwcx). So I downloaded the PWCX and... linux:/home/george/progs/usb-pwcx-8.2.2/x86/gcc-3.2 # insmod pwcx-2.4.20.o pwcx-2.4.20.o: kernel-module version mismatch pwcx-2.4.20.o was compiled for kernel version 2.4.20 while this kernel is version 2.4.20-4GB. and I have overridden this...although it has tainted the kernel....is this the only way to get it to work? It does work now....but there is a delay..and I keep getting msgs like this: Aug 25 13:10:15 linux kernel: usb-uhci.c: iso_find_start: gap in seamless isochronous scheduling Aug 25 13:10:15 linux kernel: pwc Frame buffer underflow (44871 bytes); discarded. The pwc module is supposedly built into the kernel now. With SuSE 8.1 it was always loaded for me automatically. I did not have to do anything. For some reason in 8.2 it does not load automatically. After a reboot if I do lsmod, pwc is not listed. However, I can do modprobe pwc and I'm all set. If the picture is too small, get the pwcx module too. You'll have to do insmod -f, and it will give you a warning, but it works fine. Lots of helpful information here: http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/ The above site covers Philips plus the various other cams that use the pwc module. ******************************************************** Powered by SuSE Linux 8.2 Professional KDE 3.1.1 KMail 1.5.1 This is a Microsoft-free computer Bryan S.
