Compared to Thunderbird, I've found Kmail seems really slow when checking mail or displaying folder contacts via imap when using a Gmail account. My older 3.5.9 version on my laptop seems much faster. Jumping into a "folder" on Gmail that has a couple hundred messages can take a LONG time to list the messages.
