Windows emulator for Linux
Hi What would be a good win-98 emulator for Linux? Is it vmware of win4lin? I have tried the vmware that comes with SuSE, but I found it to be quite slow what comes to screen handling. Reason is that my spouse wants to go to Linux, but one bookkeeping software and banking software needs win-98. We are also ready to pay for this sw... Jaska.
Screen redraws would be due to system resources, not vmware entirely. It's very fast on my system. /Dee -----Original Message----- From: Jaakko Tamminen [mailto:jtamminen@satabaana.net] Sent: Thursday, October 04, 2001 9:53 AM To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: [SLE] Windows emulator for Linux Hi What would be a good win-98 emulator for Linux? I have been using win 4lin for quite a while and am quite pleased. I think it is faster than vmware. I am using suse 7.2 on amdk6-3 450 with 256 megs. Win4lin uses the linux filesystem and not one huge file as with vmware. I think for what you need win4lin is o.k. as with money they do give a money back guarantee if you are not satisfied. My boss runs a similar configuration running autocad 14 with win4lin. It is as fast if not faster than native win98. Win4lin can use up to a maximum of 64 meg memory which is plenty fast. (even 16megs will work because it also uses additional memory through linux) does not hurt to try it. harry "W.D.McKinney" wrote:

There is one other important factor that comes up, in VMWare, you can cut and paste to Linux, or the opposite. You can't do this with Win4Lin. I have both and prefer VMW. It has never crashed, and with adequate memory, is natively fast. -- Best regards, Gary

My problem with Win4Lin is the fact that it requires kernel mods... and there is no intelligent way to install it on a system or to uninstall it. I ran a 2.x version of Win4Lin for awhile and mod'd my own kernel but when I switched to SuSE 7.2 there was: 1) No mods for a 2.4.x kernel available. 2) I had no clue whatever as to where they had stashed their files when I downloaded the 2.x version so that I could apply them to SuSE 7.2 I never did get it installed on 7.2 I was very glad to find another solution.

VMware (and Win98) likes lots of physical memory. With 128MB of RAM, I had best results with 40MB allocated to the Win98 session. Response was slow. I learned to hold a click until I saw the button depress. Now with 384M of RAM, I can give Win98 128MB and it runs at nearly native speed. Sound doesn't work on most configurations. I'd go along with this. Adding additional memory, which is sooo cheap nowadays makes a big difference. VMWare (light version for Windows 9x) has also come down in price making it quite competitive. I'm holding out for version 3.0. I have no experience of Win4Lin because you have to buy before you try. As some kind soul pointed out to me when I made the same comment (vmware = slow), make sure that you give your Windows machine (under vmware) more than the default 49M. I had given up totally on it and went back to Win4Lin. Now you couldn't *give* me Win4Lin and take my VMWare. It is excellent but you will need to tune it a bit. BTW, I have a copy of Win4Lin for sale cheep. -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ + Bruce S. Jaska, You might look at using WINE. It can run a number of windows programs, I am currently using it with all my old windows games (except black and white). I would suggest getting the newest version off the WINE home page (www.winehq.com), then you could run the program in linux native mode. Oliver, I would be happy to help you out. I only have one of the games you mentioned because I am not much of an game player, but I do own 688i Hunter Killer. We can start with this game and get it going. But we need to take this discusion off this list because it is off topic. May post an update when we get more stuff working. It has been a while since I have tried WINE. Tell me/us, what games you are running & what tweaks yall made-if any?
Will it run Civ II or Red Alert or WordPerfect 8/9???
I would like to run these applications which I have so far not found in the wine homepage to be supported: Rebirth 1.0 audio application, audio runs GOOD, but screen addressment Rebirth 2.01 audio application, audio runs GOOD, but screen addressment VGA Planets Winplan 3.5 front screen loads, but cannot play game Planets 4 front screen loads, but cannot play game Incubation (Battle Isle 4) title loads, but no sound 688i Hunter Killer title loads from cd, but gets stuck on front screen, no sound My versions are all registered and original so that is not sort of a shareware restriction, but a problem of tweak options for wine. i also stand in front of a wall when it comes to that the audio WORKS for the sound applications, but does not for the games. WONDER BIG TIME. Hello Austin!! I am currently trying out Wine as well. The programs I use (Rebirth and VGA Planets/Winplan) do work in part, but sort of problem lies in the SCREEN ADDRESSING. how should I twiddle that? example: appearance of NTpassword is under native windoze: user1 password1 info1 user2 password2 info2 user3 password3 info3 user4 password4 info4 user5 password5 info5 but under wine it is mixed up, sort of like this: user5 password2 info1 user1 password3 info2 user2 password4 info3 user3 password5 info4 user4 password1 info5 how can i fix that? it appears to be not a program, but a wine error. hope we can work this out together! -- *º¤., ¸¸,.¤º*¨¨¨*¤ =Oliver@home= *º¤., ¸¸,.¤º*¨¨*¤ I http://www.bmw-roadster.de/Friends/Olli/olli.html I I http://www.bmw-roadster.de/Friends/friends.html I I http://groups.yahoo.com/group/VGAP-93 I I http://home.t-online.de/home/spacecraft.portal I

Jaska, You might look at using WINE. It can run a number of windows programs, I am currently using it with all my old windows games (except black and white). I would suggest getting the newest version off the WINE home page (www.winehq.com), then you could run the program in linux native mode.
