Hi, I've been unable to compile any GTK applications in SuSE 8 personal edition. The error message I get is usually: ------------- Please check that gtk-config is in path, the directory where GTK+ libraries are installed (returned by 'gtk-config --libs' command) is in LD_LIBRARY_PATH or equivalent variable and GTK+ is version 1.2.3 or above. ------------- I have gtk-1.2.10-284 installed but not any gtk-libs... I'm not sure if I need to install them (can't find them on any of the cd's) or if I only need to set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH to something. I've searched all over my computer and I've been unable to find 'gtk-config' anywhere. I would really appreciate any thoughts about this... not being able to compile any GTK applications has been giving me a headache ever since I installed SuSE. =( Btw, is there some source like mandrakes 'cooker' available anywhere? Would be nice with some new fresh packages every now and then. =) Thnx in advance /Mats

You would need gtk gtk-devel glib glib-devel always to compile gtk programs. -- Mads Martin Jørgensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort?" -- A. P. J.
Ok, do I have to get the tarballs then or does suse provide rpm's for the devel packages? I haven't been able to find any of the devel packages on the cd's.=20 Btw, I haven't been able to find any devel tarballs at ftp.gtk.org either.. Does the tarballs contain the devel files I need to? If I choose to use the tarballs doesn't I have to uninstall gtk and glib before I install the tarballs.... an operation like that sounds like a sure dependency breaker :\ /Mats

They're all there. Just search for them in YaST2 and install. In 8.0 it's: ./xdev1/gtk.rpm ./gra1/glib.rpm ./xdev3/glib-devel.rpm ./xdev3/gtk-devel.rpm -- Mads Martin Jørgensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort?" -- A. I don't have those files on my cds... I did a find ./ -name gtk* on al 3 cds. Are my cd's corrupt or something? Maybe it's time to start phoning SuSE about a new set of cds. :\

Aaaaha. No, it's because you only have the Personal version. What version? 7.3 or 8.0? -- Mads Martin Jørgensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort?" -- A. P. J.
8.0... Aren't I supposed to be able to compile programs with my linux distro? Cursed be my thin wallet for making me buy the cheap one! ;P On Tue, 2002-05-28 at 14:18, Mads Martin Joergensen wrote:

Well, you can wait till the 8.0 hits ftp and get the packages from there, that's all I can suggest. Or of course compile it all yourself. But this is exactly what the difference between Personal and Professional is all about. One can compile stuff, but the amount of development libraries is very reduced. -- Mads Martin Jørgensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort?" -- A. Oh... that kind of sucks :\ Do you think I can take the packages off the professional ed.? I have a friend whom I think runs suse on their server at work, I could probably borrow a cd from him. Do you know which cd it's on? You don't happen to know when suse 8 will hit the ftp btw? Would be nice to have another source for packages if I'm missing more. Yes, no problem.

No, but somebody else on the list should be able to help you here. [ Yes, I could find out but ATM it would be a hazzle, I do not have the CDs right now ]

No idea. -- Mads Martin Jørgensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort?" -- A. P. J.
I'm currently running suse 8 personal ed. and I need to be able to compile gtk programs. Since no gtk- or glib-devel packages where included in the personal edition I'm gonna go to a buddys work and borrow their professional edition. But I need to know which cd the files are on because he didn't want to lend me the whole set. Does anyone know on which cd these files are on: ./xdev3/glib-devel.rpm ./xdev3/gtk-devel.rpm Those are the only files I need. Thnx to Mads Martin for all the help btw. =) /Mats
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I decided to install those 2 packages just to help you out, and who knows I may need them myself one day. They were both on Disc 3, so you'll only need to borrow one of his Pro discs. Good luck.
