Hi; Stupid newbie-like question. Installed 8.1 as an upgrade to 7.2 and I'm trying to get familiar with the installation and clean up junk remaining from the 7.2 install. Where did they put the kernel source?? Not in /usr/src !! Thanks -- Tony Alfrey tonyalfrey@earthlink.net "I'd rather be sailing"

Er, yeah, actually! It's in /usr/src/linux-2.4.19.SuSE. Did you install the complete linux-source package? --

Quite apparently, I did not (what good is the thing without the kernel source?? How am I supposed to recompile a kernel??) Now, the only problem is where the $*%&^ is it?? I ran Yast2 and it tells me that a default kernel was installed but I can only find the kernel image in /boot, no sources. Arrgh! I'll look through the CDs. -- Tony Alfrey tonyalfrey@earthlink.net "I'd rather be sailing"

Tony, Do you have the personal version or the pro version. I don't think the sources came with the personal version. Ken Schneider

Alright, this is crazy. On the CDs, I can only find what appear to be compiled kernel images and modules. For example, I have what is called k_deflt-2.4.19-74.i586.rpm which kpackage tells me has only binaries and no sources. This sounds so dumb but if someone has the SuSE 8.1 CDs, can they tell me where I can find the kernel sources and what it's called?? The kernel source is in a package called, er, kernel-source. Go into the YaST package management and do a search for it. It's not installed by default because it's enormous and most people don't compile their own kernels. --

Using YaST --> Software, search for "source", you should find "kernel-source". I've only got the DVD here, but it should be on one of the CD's. Regards Sid. Tony Alfrey wrote:
