The suggestion that I use the /etc/sysconfig/powermanagement script to suspend the pcmcia/alsasound devices so that they would work after suspension of the system worked for two consecutive suspend operations --then broke, again. The third suspension never happened, when attempted. The system kept beeping at me and when I finally decided --after roughly a minute of this-- to use the reset switch I found it was not operational. Fortunately, holding the off switch for several seconds overrides it, so I was able to shut down the box. The sound never worked again after suspension of the system. I guess it's going to be a manual reset each and every time I have to suspend --which is far better and less time-consuming than having to reboot each day. Thanks, once again, to everyone who tried to help. This box is on its way out ...just as soon as I find a replacement. It is a pre-2000 box so apparently the BIOS is one of the flakey ones, or something. I just dunno, nor do I care, any longer. ...CH
