Is M player hard to build, configure..I'm not really satisfied with x theater..I've never compiled anything in my life..just wondering what the reulsts from ppl here on the list have been. Thank you for your time. Lee
I'd just install Suse's rpm package via Yast. From what I've read on Mplayer, it's the 'project from hell' to compile. I've not compiled it myself. On Mon, 2003-05-19 at 22:49, lee wrote:

I've never found it any harder than any other 'configure && make && make install' sort of app. The problem with it seems to be getting all its dependencies sorted: it relies on all sorts of other libraries to play encrypted DVDs, Quicktime, Windows Media and so on. Once you've got all the right versions of all the libraries installed, mplayer is easy. I wouldn't recommend building a complete mplayer for a beginner though - there's an awful lot of hoops to jump through. -- "...our desktop is falling behind stability-wise and feature wise to KDE ...when I went to Mexico in December to the facility where we launched gnome, they had all switched to KDE3." - Miguel de Icaza, March 2003

I've never had any problems compiling MPlayer - I think the important thing, as it says on the web site, is to read the documentation: I guess that applies to all software! Providing you download all the appropriate libraries (and there are are links to all of them at mplayerhq) it will compile quite happily on 8.2 with the appropriate instructions (./configure --enable-whatever-it-is-you-want). Personally, I prefer xine, particularly for dvd's. David -- Si Hoc Legere Scis Nimium Eruditionis Habes

I've never had problems compiling MPlayer when it was in the Release Candidate stage, now that 0.90 has been "released", I cannot compile due to an odd error dealing with asm that only gets about 4 worthless google hits. I usually use Xine or Ogle anyway, MPlayer always warns me that my system cannot handle playing a DVD, even though the others work fine. Josh

MPlayer works great! Just go over to packman at http://packman.links2linux.de/index.php4?action=128 and download ALL the packages it lists for each version of SuSE. In case you dont read german, the bottom list is of things you need to add to be able to read all the varying formats including dvd's.
Simply click on each and save in a convenient spot and then install. You can find the documentation at http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/ . Richard

unfortunately, not all the dependencies are there.. downloading everything listed from the webpage left me still needing libdv, liblirc_client, libsmbclient (!), and libsndfile. i had originally planned on installing it via apt since packman is in the suse apt reposotiry, but it kept trying to grab suse's very weak (and also older) version. when i took base out of the /etc/apt/sources.list i got a lot of failed depends (same list, but claiming they were not installable). guess i've been lucky so far.. this is the first time i've ever had a problem installing something with apt.. -- trey

The problem is that rpm (and therefore apt4rpm) looks at version numbers in alphabetical order. And if you sort it, 90-rc4 comes after 90-1, so rpm thinks it's newer. I'm sure there's a way to force apt to install the older (as it thinks) version. Try asking on the apt4rpm mailing list
