[opensuse] ATI Radeon 8500 & SuSE 10.2
I am hoping that someone out there can point me in the right direction to get my graphics card working in SuSE 10.2 I have followed instructions to try to get 3D running on the card but with no success. I have done some background reading from google and it appears, and please correct me if I am wrong here, that ATI no longer offer drivers/support for this card under linux, specifically Xorg 7.2, and then I am not too sure if this is a suSE issue or other distributions work fine. Does anyone know of a way around this, or if there is no way around, a good graphics card to replace this card, similar in performance to this card. I would rather not do this, but if this is the only way, then so be it. Thanks for any suggestions, Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You better look for some nVidia card. Their drivers were always better, and their support as well. you are lucky that you can replace the card, I can't on my laptop, so now no 3D for me with 10.2. -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny) Even the most advanced equipment in the hands of the ignorant is just a pile of scrap. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Peter, This card should be well supported under Xorg's native radeon driver. There is no need to use ATI's drivers for this card to get acceptable 3D on your setup, it's a good card and there is no need to replace it at this time unless you need too. If you do need to, then by all means get another ATI card, because most, except for the very latest cards, are supported natively in Xorg. This makes them both convenient and easy to set up using Sax2 in runlevel 3. You will need to find either 8.28 or 8.29 version of the ATI driver, if you want to use that. Those, I believe, were the last ones to work with the older cards. Fully agreed. Same here with a 9200 SE, which does not work with the latest ATI drivers and the old drivers do not work with the current xorg 7.2. But: There is definitely no need! 3D with the native Radeon driver works ok (within the limits of such an "old iron") If you do need to, then by all means

Yes, sadly afaik they will not work with xorg 7.2 regards Eberhard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Lee & Eberhard, Thanks for the positive responses, all seems not to be lost. I really don't want to buy a new card, this one works well for what I want. From what has been written I just use the native radeon driver that comes with Xorg, and ignore the ATI drivers, correct? I guess I need to un-install these, and then go through sax2 after init 3? Are there any good howto's out there that will point me in the right direction to do this. I have always managed to get this card running 3D under SuSE pre 10.*, but I think that it has been through 'luck rather than good judgement'! Nothing special to do Peter. Just remove the ATI driver, if installed, drop down to init 3, run sax2, set the 3d on, test it and save it. You could use "sax2 -m 0=radeon" also, if you want to be sure to get the radeon module loaded. I think you'll find it results in very adequate readings from glxgears on that card. regards, Lee -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Lee, do you have any idea if this driver has a TV-out support? ========== I'm honestly not certain. I know some of the card features are unsupported in the native driver and is why some had to use the ATI binary. Best way to test is just run sax2 to see what the gui shows as being configuarable. You could probably go to the Xorg site or IRC to get better answers as well. When it was all just XFree86, I kept up with it more and followed it closer, but after it broke off I didn't worry so much about it. Mainly because the XOrg group were good at what they did, so I felt things were headed in the right direction. They've done a good job thus far and I'm glad Suse chose to go with them. regards, Lee -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
