I got the following error, when trying to update lilo to 22.5.1. After /sbin/lilo run: Fatal: /boot/message is too big (>65535 bytes) Yes, "message" file is 142091 bytes, but all were OK with previous lilo version (when I just installed SuSE). Can I just ignore this error?

*never* ignore a lilo error.
Especially when it says "Fatal".... :-) Just comment out the "message line" from lilo.conf and see if it works. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation

I have asked a wrong question. Correct one: How it was done before and was able to run without problems if /boot/message size is limited to 65535 bytes? Could anyone else please with default SuSE 8.2 Pro (with lilo) installation check their /boot/message size?

SuSE's version of lilo is patched to allow for the pretty graphics on the boot selection screen. You can't do that with the bog standard lilo Why are you upgrading lilo?

Probably because suse was using a patched version of lilo, and now they are using grub, which probably allows it. The message isn't important to booting, I delete it out anyways. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation
