Is it problematic to have both kde3-stable and kde in your apt sources.list? No that's ot a problem.
being held back from kde on a recent apt-get dist-upgrade as well as numerous package conflicts:
Are you aware that you're installing kde-3.3 beta (do you have suse-people in sources.list file)? The beta (those rpm) seem to do fine on my 9.1 system. See what you get if you install 1 of the kept back packages: # apt -s install kdelibs3 Most likely it will tell you that libjasper is not provided in the right version. Get it from http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/people/adrian/4Bos/9.1-i386/ (he that means that it is now part of the apt repository.... and that's right, but it removes ImageMagick) Try the same with e.g. kdepim3.

Install with --force-rpm. For the above that does not seem to be a problem.

It's all beta stuff, so I don't think it is a problem to have those installed with apt --force-rpm. (it's actually /bin/rpm that complains here) -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

See what you get if you install 1 of the kept back packages: # apt -s install kdelibs3 As you mention below, it asks for the libjasper package.
Most likely it will tell you that libjasper is not provided in the right version. Trying to remove ImageMagick with 'apt remove ImageMagick' to temporarily get these packages installed causes several others I like/use to be removed as well:
The following packages will be REMOVED: ImageMagick ImageMagick-Magick++ ImageMagick-devel abiword kbarcode mozplugger pixieplus
Try the same with e.g. kdepim3.

Install with --force-rpm. For the above that does not seem to be a problem.
Can't seem to find exactly how this option is used. Something like apt- get dist-upgrade --force-rpm doesn't seem right. <snip>

So I guess the question is can I get the beta packages for KDE installed (is it complete yet?) and still have Abiword and PixiePlus available? If so, how? Yep ImageMagick ImageMagick-Magick++ ImageMagick-devel require libjasper-1.700 while 1.701 is being installed. libjasper-1.701 has a true open source license while 1.700 not. Something suse prefers.
Try the same with e.g. kdepim3.

apt --force-rpm dist-upgrade (That's without -get !)

I think that pixieplus depends on ImageMagick that is going to be removed => that removes pixieplus. I can provide an alternative solution to this libjasper thing later. -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

How much later? ;-) In the interim, would you suggest: 1) Installing libjasper and removing the conflicting packages 2) Using the 'apt --force-rpm dist-upgrade' command 3) Waiting for the alternate solution Thanks again. -- Cheers, Trey --- There is an innocence in admiration; it is found in those to whom it has not yet occurred that they, too, might be admired some day. - Friedrich Nietzsche 5:29pm up 17:44, 3 users, load average: 0.13, 0.12, 0.10 Linux ga-canton-u1-c5b-11 2.6.5-7.82cvs20040624171121-default #1 Thu Jun 24 17:11:21 UTC 2004 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
