Hi all, I finaly decided to jump into PHP and Mysql, which I installed as I set up my SuSE 7.0 box. PHP went just fine, but MySql seam to be trouble. As starting MySql for the first time, I'm about to set the root password, but it just don't let me! I manage my box remotely through ssh, and this first what I got in the display after running 'rcmysql start' (have faked real host and domain name): host:~ # rcmysql start Creating MySQL privilege database and starting MySQL. Creating db table Creating host table Creating user table Creating func table Creating tables_priv table Creating columns_priv table PLEASE REMEMBER TO SET A PASSWORD FOR THE MySQL root USERS ! This is done with: /usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -h localhost password 'new-password' -p AND /usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -h host.domain.com password 'new-password' -p See the manual for more instructions. Please report any problems with the /usr/bin/mysqlbug script! The latest information about MySQL is available on the web at http://www.mysql.com Support MySQL by buying support/licenses at http://www.tcx.se/license.htmy. Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /var/mysql done Ok, so far all well... but then I try to follow instructions and enter: host:~ # /usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -h localhost password thenewpass -p Enter password: (typed 'thenewpass' here as well) and got this: /usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed error: 'Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: YES)' tried again exactly as said in inst.: host:~ # /usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -h localhost password new-password -p Enter password: (typed thenewpass) /usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed error: 'Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: YES)' Ok, I realize I have to auth with the old empty passw (I thought), so: host:~ # /usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -h localhost password 'new-password' -p Enter password: (just enter) well it 'swallowed' it but no more action... so tried something else, with just fail as result... What am I doing wrong here? Have seached the whole maillist db for an answer, but no... so what, can't I do this remotely or? please, thanks, Joakim
