(OT) 64-bit Linux - THANKS
Hello everyone: Just a short note to say thank you to all of you who responded to my earlier request about 64-bit machines and Linux. I didn't realize just how many flavors of Linux are running on AMD 64 machines, it was an eye-opener. Again, many thanks. Cheers, Mike

Remember that Linux has over 10 years of experience with 64-bits. This is more than any commercial Unix except for HP's Tru64 Unix. And Windows is not quite there yet as a fully released product.

Linux also runs on UltraSPARC (Sun and Fujitsu), IBM/Fujitsu z/390 mainframes and on the new PSI IA64-based mainframe (z/OS, Windows, Linux, Solaris x86_64) not yet out in the wild, using Amdahl mainframe microcode and setting to offer resilience and uptimes to rival anything from IBM, looks like my boys will be back with a bang. This is true and HP-UX runs 64-bits on PA-RISC and IA64. But, these are relatively more recent as Tru64 Unix is the first 64-bit Unix followed by Linux on the Alpha in 1995. My statement was the 64-bit Linux predates all commercial Unixes except for Tru64 Unix. We actually had it running at a Boston Computer Society meeting in February, 1995. -- Jerry Feldman <gaf@blu.org> Boston Linux and Unix user group http://www.blu.org PGP key id:C5061EA9 PGP Key fingerprint:053C 73EC 3AC1 5C44 3E14 9245 FB00 3ED5 C506 1EA9
