Did you enter a pass phrase when creating your key pair with ssh-keygen? It is probably not the remote host asking you for your password, but the ssh client asking you for your pass phrase which is needed to access your private key.
Any way to do rdist over ssh?

Yes I did enter a pass phrase when creating with ssh-keygen. I guess I'm not clear how to resolve this -- that is keep it from asking each time.
