[opensuse] Probably OT but just in case ...
My system: Leap15 / Plasma 5 I have been trying unsuccessfully to play dvds on this new system. Tried all the usual but nothing worked, then started on the not-so-usual. My system would see everything on the dvd drive but vlc wouldn't play the video. After further digging it seemed that it wasn't passing region check. More digging turned up the following, "The problem is that a lot of newer drives are RPC2 drives these days. Some of these drives don't allow raw access to the drive until the drive firmware has done a region check. VLC uses libdvdcss and it needs raw access to the DVD drive to crack the encryption key" So, I removed the little slim drive (mfg date June 2012) and connected a full sized LG drive from March 2010 and now everything works just fine except the cover won't fit. Maybe a usb to sata converter and go outboard? Question now is how do I find a slim dvd drive that will fit in this mini-itx case that is also RPC-1? Or, how do I find a dvdcss equivalent that works with an RPC-2 drive? Thanks, Fred -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Can't provide an answer, just some commentary. Having played DVDs on openSUSE since around 2004, I'd not done so under Leap 42.3, until recently. When I tried both home-recorded and pre-recorded DVDs on two different 42.3 systems - one laptop and one desktop - using either VLC, Dragon Player or SMPlayer, in some cases I'd get the opening DVD title sequence but none of them could navigate the menus, by either mouse or keyboard, or play anything. This discs play fine on hardware DVD players. I suppose there could be a missing codec but I've always had a large bunch of codecs from Packman installed on every openSUSE system until now; this seemed more like some other issue. gumb -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Did you try to set the region instead? I've never done that in Linux, but maybe it is possible. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.0 x86_64 at Telcontar)

Because I don't view DVDs imported from other regions, IIRC, I just set the region to "my" region: https://software.opensuse.org/package/regionset?search_term=regionset Gruß Jan -- Beware of programmers who carry screwdrivers. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

That was the bit I was missing: regionset was unknown to me. I installed it, put the original drive back, ran regionset on it, changed the region code from "2" to "1", everything started working. IIRC, this dvd drive came from ebay, so some other schmuck probably couldn't get it to work, either, hence the sale. For me, too. After some hours, I think I found an error message in some log, maybe dmesg or so.
I installed it, put the original drive back, ran regionset on it, changed the region code from "2" to "1", everything started working.
Cool! But please keep in mind that often you can change the code only five times. Then it sticks and you really have to buy a new DVD drive if you don't like the code set.

Or, someone wanted to play original DVDs from Japan. :)
Thank you, Jan

Lucky you: The VLC FAQ entry Steven quoted in his original post also states that "On other RPC2 drives that do allow raw access, it might take VLC a long time to crack the key. My system: Leap15 / Plasma 5
I have been trying unsuccessfully to play dvds on this new system. VLC uses libdvdcss and it needs raw access to the DVD drive to crack the encryption key"
So, I removed the little slim drive (mfg date June 2012) and connected a full sized LG drive from March 2010 and now everything works just fine except the cover won't fit. Maybe a usb to sata converter and go outboard?
Question now is how do I find a slim dvd drive that will fit in this mini-itx case that is also RPC-1? Or, how do I find a dvdcss equivalent that works with an RPC-2 drive?
Probably unrelated, but maybe helpful to others with DVD playing problems. On my 42.3 system, playing DVDs is erratic. I've taken to copying them to the hard drive with Handbrake and playing with VLC. This is reliable. I remember that we once used patches for the firmware. Going from from rpc2 to rpc1. If you're lucky you might find some firmware that fits your dvd player on the rpc1 site. Archived noways. And as the site says, "use at your own risks" http://www.rpc1.org/ -- /bengan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
