you should *immediately* run an intensive check on the drive; as root, run "smartctl -t long /dev/sda" which will last several minutes to hours depending on the size of the drive. Once it's finished you can see the results by running "smartctl -a /dev/sda" which may also show the LBA address of the failing block(s); there are some references (use Google) explaining what to do to mark (and remap) the sector. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ran 'smartctl' on the drive and found the error, however I am not sure how to fix the error it found. I see the address of the failing block as; <snip> After command completion occurred, registers were: ER ST SC SN CL CH DH -- -- -- -- -- -- -- 10 51 08 4c 57 66 e5 Error: IDNF at LBA = 0x0566574c = 90593100 <snip> Thank you again for your help. Thank you again for your help.
You can find a very good description about this at the following URL: <http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/badblockhowto.html FWIW, I had similarly looking problems last year which turned out to be caused by the hard disks reaching end of life (and yes, this was even true for *four* new Samsung 1TB hard disks...).
