/Erik I assume you have installed the nvidia proprietary drivers?

Hi Before you do that, there are new drivers for your card in the openSUSE nvidia repository Server Name download.nvidia.com Directory on Server opensuse/11.3/ There's an Xorg update too which Yast chose for me but I'm not expert enough to be sure whether the two are linked. Anyway, it works for my old laptop with nvidia 6100. And you get super wobbly windows if you need them too. Oh, and I had to reboot after the update. Just logging out doesn't work. The only line I have in /etc/X11/xorg.conf is: Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "on" EndSection HTH L x -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi, I found the Nvidia settings as described above, but I also found that they wouldn't save from there. So every time I booted up I had to set them again. I finally found the settings in a file something like /etc/.nvidia. It is a hidden file, if you want to write them in the file itself. The laptop that I am using now doesn't have nvidia graphics, so I am trying to come up with the file name from memory. Sorry I can't be any more specific than that, but poke around in the files a bit and you will find it. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

sorry, i didn't get this before: you are able to run nvidia-settings, adjusting your video display. but you can't save the file, even though there's a button that says "save to xorg.conf" or something like that. is that correct? if yes, you'll have to start nvidia-settings as root, i.e., open a terminal, type "su" and give your root password. _then_ start nvidia-settings from that terminal and you'll be able to save the file. reason: files under /etc/x11/ can be changed only by root. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Did you install the nVidia binary driver - either from the nVidai repository or installed it yourself from a downloaded driver off the nVida site? If you've just done a default install, and are using the Nouveau driver, there is no nvidia-settings application. If you've installed the nVidia binary driver, you will find it in your desktop environment application menu... or you can also launch it from a terminal by typing nvidia-settings C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I installed nvidia from the repository. I have tried to boot and writing nomodeset at the splash screen. Obviously it seems, that it may be the noveau driver, that puzzles me. At least I cannot get nvidia-settings up running it in a root terminal How do I get nvidia-settings then ? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

There's this to do too: I had a similar problem which was resolved by adding nomodeset to the kernel commandline and setting NO_KMS_IN_INITRD to yes in the sysconfig. If that doesn't work then there's the xrandr setting in xinitrc to look at. Easy isn't it! i've been fiddling around with nvidia drivers a lot recently; unlike you i installed via the ~.run file from the nvidia repos, which is slightly different. in my case the use of nvidia drivers is initiated in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, which openSUSE 11.3 doesn't use anymore. i had to run "nvidia-xconfig" from a root terminal, which created the file for me w/o any hassles. i suspect this might work for you as well. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

on second thought, i don't think so. there's a separate package, "nvidia- settings," that provides the settings thing. if you have that installed already, try my first suggestion... -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Did you run /usr/bin/nvidia-xconfig in run level 3, after installing. I find its needed and I rename the old /etc/X11/xconfig first. That always allow nvidia-settings to run for me. Also I save the nividia-settings in my home directory. seems to work, of course I'm the only user. Yesterday I installed the new 256-53 driver using YaST and the Nvidia repo on both my 11.4 (test) and 11.3 systems. I also have nomodeset in my boot options in /boot/menu.1st. Not sure if its needed anymore. -- Russ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
