I have to disagree and amplify previous comments. 1. Avoid coax cable. Twisted pair is more reliable and much easier to physically route, and build. My experiments (and a CNE's statement) show UTP is faster than coax. 2. When using Win98, you will have to edit the registry and disable encrypted passwords to get samba to work. See the samba homepage previously listed for information. It really is pretty easy. I have samba serving three win95 and one win98 computer, and the configuration went quite well. I followed the instructions in "Linux Networking Toolkit" by Sery (IDG Books) and the only problem I've had was in sharing the CD-ROM - once Windows logs into samba and maps the CD-ROM, it becomes unmountable. Of course, this was cured with a configuration change. Well, I'm a little late getting into this thread but will add my 2 cents worth... 1. I've been using coax cable for years for small networks. If you only have a couple of hosts you can use coax and avoid the purchase of a hub. On the otherhand if a cable is damaged it is harder to find the problem since all hosts are connected in a series. For a few hosts this isn't a problem (ie. I have three systems connected at home). 2. Twisted pair can handle 100bT but I believe coax is limited to 10bT. I currently have an old 486 host that can only run at 10bT so coax is fine for me. 3. It is not necessary to turn off encrypted passwords to get samba to work. The better way is to tell samba to use encrypted passwords in the smb.conf file. Obviously, this won't work if you have mixed Win98 and Win95 hosts. Gerry On 23-Jan-99 George Toft wrote:
