Windows doesn't know cups from a bacon sandwich, so you need Samba.
I have been told several times that you can print from windows without using samba.
Windows can use IPP or HTTP to print to a CUPS printer.
OK, I certainly replied too soon to Carlos. I now have found this reference: http://www.networkcomputing.com/showitem.jhtml?docid=1608ws1 which says that 2K and above do support IPP. Mea culpa. There is IPP support available for 9x, this can be downloaded from Microsoft. Mea culpa again :-!
I don't know why I have never run into networkcomputing.com before now, but I have certainly added it to my bookmarks.
Appreciate the comments here and I will affirm that WindowsXP and Linux can print to Internet Protocol printers (IPP and HTTP) as well as Unix style. This is a given. And I have setup IPP printing on other Linux boxes that have been accessible from Windows, but why not SuSE. On the day (Sunday 06/11) of my original message, I had sent a second email to the first, indicating that I had successfully configured Samba to share the printer to another Linux box (Dapper) and that WindowsXP could "see" the printer and add it but once added, was access denied but not really, the actual problem was that WindowsXP was not creating the port to the Samba/SMB resource and I am still befuddled on that. I still would like to see a howto on this (sharing printers on SuSE 10.1) and may even write one once I figure it all out for SuSE 10.1 as this is a SuSE 10.1 issue. One issue I have with SuSE 10.1 on this is why make things so difficult to set up something a simple as printing sharing and why is CUPS crippled? I have done this with CUPS on other systems and it has been a cake walk using the CUPS web interface. With Fedora, printer sharing is as easy as clicking a button. So that it not be said that I am flaming SuSE 10.1, I am not. I am running 10.1 as my main system at home and I am very please with it, including the updater, which I knew was slightly broken but no big deal and that seems to be fixed now. My issue is that I have a small road block here on printer sharing I am trying to resolve.
