I'm having a problem here and I haven't done anything that would cause it. Well my suse install is locking up so hard that I can't move the mouse, hit ctrl+alt+del, or anything. I leave it and come home from work and it's locked up. Any ideas? I have to actually hit the reset button on the system. I would suspect hardware. I was suffering the same problem that eventually resulted in corrupted hard drives - even with the side cover removed. I had a suggestion from a friend that it could be the video card fan, which did seem to be stopping when I checked it, so I removed it, cleaned it and put in a drop of WD40 which seemed to cure it until I put the side cover on again. Finally I replaced the video card a few days ago, but have only this minute put the side cover back on --- and I wait. I would also advise checking the CPU heatsink to make sure it's firmly in place and that the fan speed looks OK. I had also replaced the power supply as previously I had seen the power LED flashing with the box locked up, typically when I was away for at least a couple of hours. Regards Sid. jason pratt wrote:

What suse version? What type of cpu (mulitple, athlon, etc) do you have? -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

running SuSE 9.. system is an Athlon 1.3ghz. I've always had the cover off of the machine with a fan blowing on it, so it shouldn't be heat. I had redhat on this for quite a while till I switched to suse, and rh didn't do this.. it's wierd. -- Jason Pratt themadtux@tampabay.rr.com Registered Linux User # 334419 Registered Linux Machine # 219697
Quite mysterious as I pressed an Athlon 900 box into service on 8.2 after I had my hardware lockup problems and only recently went back to the 2200 XP+ after buying a new hard drive (fresh install 9.0), power supply and GEForce FX5200 video card. With all the covers now back on, I've not seen the problem, so my guess is that it was the GEForce 4 MX-440 card. Would it be possible to go back to RedHat if you have a spare drive around and see if it's SuSE or just a coincidence - strange things can happen. I think you said you have a NVidia card and I know that especially the 4496 driver can cause the same problem. I saw the scrambled VT and lockup on my Mandrake 9.1 box with Riva TNT2 M64 just a few days ago while trying to shutdown (either 4496 or 4363 driver), since upgrading to Mandrake 9.2 and 4496, it's been fine.
