[opensuse] openSUSE 11.0 on Thinkpad T61 with NVidia
Hi List, Having had sleepless night waiting for the release, I finally installed 11.0 on my thinkpad. Aside of feeling kind of weird with so much changes, there are some problems I'm having. I've installed NVidia drivers via 1-click install, they went fine, but then I had some problems activating 3d, sax2 -r would just bring me to the runlevel 3, then after init3/init5 come back to gui, and I was not able to activate 3d again. Then I did nvidia-xconfig, sax2 -r and I don't remeber on what exact moment, but I could activate 3d, and even enable desktop effects, cube, etc... The problem is that with all that, the driver doesn't seem to be properly installed, for example, if I activate one window, the other windows loose their title bars, and when I try to switch back to the other windows, it "shows" that they are active but I cannot move them, trying to move brings to the weird moves of the other window, which was active before. I cannot close windows, close button activates when I move the mouse over it (red background) but it won't close no matter how many times I click it. I have to do left click close on the taskbar to actually close it. I also had close/minimize/maximize buttons just dissappear leaving only green squares in their places couple of times, and the system is kind of slow. Anybody experiencing the same? I'd really like to get it working, though it seems it will take a while to get used to it, everything seems to be somewhere else now. I don't use desktop effects. However, I seem to remember some chatter about it. Although I am not sure where I heard it. You might want to do a few searches on the mailing list archives. Try searching for "compiz" if you don't have something in mind. I seem to remember that coming up in conversation. Thanks Mike! I tried almost everything, eventually installed Emerald and it seemed to work, with some minor problems with rendering. Then I had problems adjusting everything in KDE 4.0 and as guys suggested here I'm back to 11.0 with 3.5 which is just plain perfection! ;-) There was some problem with fonts, I posted here earlier in 11.0 with KDE 3, I've figured that too from Ben Kevan's blog (thanks to Ben) http://www.benkevan.com/blog/installing-microsoft-fonts-on-opensuse-110/ Cheers, Sergey On Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 4:44 AM, Michael Mientus <michael.mientus@gmail.com> wrote:
