Howdy folks, anyone who's read Planet SuSE this morning will know that I'll be unleashing ULB GNOME 0.8.0 onto SuSE 9.1 tomorrow, but what it doesn't say is that you, the SuSE community have the opportunity to have some input into how it looks. Yes, in the past I've asked for input on which Metacity theme to use, and now I want to know how you feel about this: Should there be desktop icons for Evolution, Galeon and OpenOffice.org for new users, or not? Or, should there be icons, but replace OpenOffice.org with AbiWord? The top panel will have launchers for Evolution, Galeon and YaST (as well as the user's home directory). Speak now, you have about 24 hours to affect the way this goes! -- James Ogley, Webmaster, Rubber Turnip james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk Jabber: riggwelter@myjabber.net Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 9.0) GNOME updates for SuSE: http://www.usr-local-bin.org

Yes, I think this is a good idea. I would rather prefer Icons for OpenOffice than AbiWord. -- Andre Truter | Software Engineer | Registered Linux user #185282 ICQ #40935899 | AIM: trusoftzaf | http://www.trusoft.co.za ~ "Oh Bother!" said the Borg, "We assimilated the Pooh!" ~ Disclaimer and Confidentiality Warning This message is intended for the addressee only. Because they get setup the first time the user logs into GNOME - you don't want it done every time - a user could delete the icons, and then find them reappearing the next time they login.
No allow both
I'd really prefer to make it one or the other - simplicity is the foil to the confusion generated by the goodness of choice in Free Software.

Well, ULB GNOME has always been a drop-in replacement for the SuSE packages supplied in a given distro version, so it fixes issues, changes defaults, that sort of thing (eg under ULB GNOME, the default browser is Galeon, not Epiphany or Mozilla depending on where you click). And, my recommended installation method is APT, which sorts out the dependencies for you. (Or, it will do so as soon as the FTP edition is available ;) ) -- James Ogley, Webmaster, Rubber Turnip james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk Jabber: riggwelter@myjabber.net Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 9.0) GNOME updates for SuSE: http://www.usr-local-bin.org

I have been using apt for more than a year now. It works great. You only need to make sure your sources.list is sane. -- Andre Truter | Software Engineer | Registered Linux user #185282 ICQ #40935899 | AIM: trusoftzaf | http://www.trusoft.co.za ~ The box said: "Windows 95 or better", so I installed Linux ~ Disclaimer and Confidentiality Warning This message is intended for the addressee only. If there was a really nice brushed metal theme ala MAc OS X (panther) I would love it.

I guess OpenOffice makes more sense for compatibility reasons with MS Office documents.

I already have gnome 2.6 from ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt on my
SuSE 9.1 installation.
Will I be able to update **sanely** to ULB Gnome 0.8? What's the
difference between ULB Gnome 0.8 and Gnome 2.6 from ftp above?
Excuse my ignorance on this matter.

ULB GNOME 0.8.0 is essentially a patched version of the GNOME 2.4 install in SuSE 9.1, so it's not really for installation over GNOME 2.6. That said, because of the way the package works, I suspect that if you install the ulb-gnome package and the ulb-themes packages, you'd get the theme and backgrounds, as well as the additional menu items, but without the rest of the customisation, since that's all now done in the various packages. The GNOME 2.6 install you're using is from the SuSE supplementary directory on the FTP server, which is not officially supported (which is why, at this time, ULB GNOME is not built against it). I guess, if you have a sacrificial machine to try it on - give it a whirl, I'd love to see the feedback. I may do it myself on an old laptop I have lying around as soon as I get a NIC for it. -- James Ogley, Webmaster, Rubber Turnip james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk Jabber: riggwelter@myjabber.net Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 9.0) GNOME updates for SuSE: http://www.usr-local-bin.org
